I recently encountered a serious issue with the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card where my cashback was wrongfully denied due to an MCC misclassification(As per Axis Bank), and I need your advice on what steps to take next.
The Issue:
- On February 26, 2025, I made an Airtel mobile recharge via the Airtel Thanks App for ₹859.00 using my Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card (which is supposed to give 25% cashback).
- When I checked my statement, no cashback was credited.
- After multiple follow-ups, Axis Bank claimed that Airtel classified this transaction under MCC 4900 - Utilities, which means they considered it a transaction done outside the Airtel Thanks App—which is completely false!
- Due to this incorrect MCC classification, Axis Bank is refusing to provide the cashback.
My Concerns:
- MCC Misclassification: Airtel incorrectly tagged my recharge transaction, leading to cashback denial. How many other users might be facing this without even realizing it?
- Lack of Accountability: Axis Bank is blaming Airtel. Meanwhile, I am stuck in between with no resolution.
- Breach of Trust: The main USP of this credit card is the 25% cashback on Airtel Thanks App transactions, and if they are denying it due to internal errors, it makes the entire card pointless!
What Should I Do Next?
I have already contacted both Airtel and Axis Bank, but neither has provided a resolution yet. I want to escalate this further.💡 What steps should I take now?
- Should I file a complaint with the Banking Ombudsman or Consumer Forum?
- Would it be effective to tag Airtel and Axis Bank on social media to get their attention?
- Has anyone else faced this issue? If yes, how did you resolve it?
