Prime Minister Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan introduced the UPI and RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi on February 13.

This will facilitate seamless cross-border transactions between the two countries. This follows the MoU on interlinking payment and messaging systems signed in July last year during the PM’s visit to Abu Dhabi.

India launched its UPI system in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on February 12. PM Modi is on a two-day trip to UAE. He was welcomed by President Nahyan. The PM was given a guard of honour on his arrival in the country. He was later accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace. The leaders will then hold meetings to take forward the bilateral strategic partnership.

This is the Prime Minister's seventh visit to the UAE since 2015.

Prime Minister Modi hailed the moment as the dawn of a new era in financial technology and said, "We are stepping into a new FinTech era with the launch of my UPI RuPay card and your Jaywan card."

Building on the foundation laid during Modi's previous visit to Abu Dhabi, an agreement on interlinking payment and messaging systems was signed, enhancing connectivity between Indian and Emirati financial networks.

As per a PTI report, the two nations agreed to link their instant payment platforms - UPI (India) and AANI (UAE).
