Hi Guys,

I have an Axis Ace card, and the last statement was generated on 18th Jan 2025 with a credit amount of ₹65.82. Since I am not using the card, I decided to close it.

To utilize the credited amount, I used ₹65 to purchase an Amazon voucher and then called customer care to close the card.

However, customer care informed me that on 18th Jan 2025, the annual fee was levied on my card. Since I made a transaction after that, they are now asking me to pay the annual fee before they can process the card closure.

This came as a surprising shock to me. I tried explaining to them that the transaction was done solely to utilize the credit balance and there was no intimation of annual fees until I see statement but they are unwilling to listen.

What can be done in this case?

I am willing to pay the annual fee of ₹600, but I don’t see any value in doing so, especially when I have better card options. Please suggest.

Thanks,

If I am understanding right, you got 66 cashback for that month?
And used 65 rs voucher to use that?
So if you are willing to close it rn,you must pay those rs before bill generation or wait for the cashback to be credited next month.
Once there is no due you can always submit closer request

Yeah, in net I will in credit after bill generation in feb excluding annual fees. But customer care is saying since you used card after levied of annual fees i.e. after 18jan.. we can't close card and you must pay the annual fees. Its kind of compulsion they are putting.

If annual fee has been charged ,you can't say I will close the card without paying.
In short you have to pay all your dues before you can submit closure request .

Now pay the fees and submit closer request. They might give you fee reversal offer if you have used the card decently.
Then it's your choice whether to keep or close

not sure but the best way may be to pay the charges generated in next statement and once that get settled then call cus care and ask for closure, they will connect to retention and retention may offer ann fee reversal

Yeah, I realized it later but that something shocking with Axis. I had closed my amex card successfully after clearing dues and excluding annual fee charges. I hope others in forum will help by my mistake.

If you 'do any kind of transaction after deducting joining fee/annual fee, it means that we agreed to them for paying the same.

The mistake you done is you made the transaction after deducting annual fee which is actually a consent to bank. If you want to reverse the annual fee in future, just do transaction above 1 lakh like 1.2 lakh something. They may reverse annual fee even if you don't meet 2 lakh spending criteria for the first time as an exceptional. They asked me to reverse my annual fee on my Airtel if i spend only 1,10,000 only. But my spend was only 33k .
