Best Public Sector Bank 2023

BiggBoss

TF Select
We're on a mission to find the best public sector bank of the year, and your opinion counts! In today's dynamic world, the quality of banking services greatly impacts our daily lives. Every aspect matters, from digital banking to customer support and the efficiency of credit/debit cards to mobile app functionality.

Criteria:

  • Online Services: Ease of use, features, and reliability of the bank's internet and mobile banking.
  • Customer Support: Responsiveness, knowledge, and friendliness of the bank's customer service.
  • Banking Products: Quality and variety of products offered, including credit cards and debit cards.
  • Mobile App: Functionality, user interface, and overall bank mobile application performance.

  • Online Services: Ease of use, features, and reliability of the bank's internet and mobile banking.

SBI netbanking is no-nonsense, and very good.

IDBl's was very good too years back, when they were Government owned.

BoB's was poor when I last used it several years back.

I do not use mobile banking.

  • Customer Support: Responsiveness, knowledge, and friendliness of the bank's customer service.

Customer service across Indian banks, either Public Sector or Private, is non-professional and generally poor (except for isolated satisfactory experiences). It is non-uniform, and depends a lot on the specific branch, and the BM serving at that point.

However, I have this much to say for SBI that their customer service is poor across the board irrespective of different categories of customers, unlike the Indian Private banks. 🙂
  • Banking Products: Quality and variety of products offered, including credit cards and debit cards.

SBI offer an wide variety of products including various government products (unlike the private banks).

I don't use any of their cards.

So I have voted for SBI overall. They have the added advantage of being the safest bank as well.

I have also used:

BoB (average).

Union Bank (worst of the lot).

Canara Bank (poor, and non-professional).

Central Bank (excellent at the specific Bangalore branch I had my salary account with for a while.

United Bank (poor).

IDBI Bank (excellent while it lasted).

PO (safe, but at a different level altogether)!

Never in my life did I think I'd say, but PNB can have moments where they aren't so bad. Have a PNB salary account, and my relationship with the bank has mostly been of struggles. However, of late I can see some real improvements in there. The mobile apps, while can be a bit slow, are quite functional nd have good features. The website too is accessible and decent in terms of performance and functionalities. The products aren't bad, and the Rupay Select CC they have is a fairly decent one.
There are only 2 other banks with which I've had any engagement with. Had a student account with SBI way back that was closed. But I have been their credit card user for nearly 5 years now. The SBI Cards app is alright, but not as good as it should be. The customer support is usually better than the rest, but as the flag carrying bank of the country, they need to be much better. So not bad, but for the led bank, falling short.
The other bank I engage with is Central Bank of India. Only thing going for it is that it is the closest located bank to my home in the village. Pretty average on all other counts!

Bank of Baroda: Greedy about physical debit card charges, netbanking and app go dead at night
Bank of India: Good FD rates, take DC charges even after hotlisting, mobile app reset to square one, and prevents use of third party keyboards, treats Gboard as "third party keyboard", has no facility of monthly bank statement on email
Bank of Maharashtra: Couldn't give me DC for over a year due to "chip shortage", account became dormant
Canara Bank: Ridiculously high debit card charges now, plus debit card hotlisting charges, no LTF CCs, monthly bank statement facility broken since 2023
Central Bank: Stole faaltu SMS charges, app is super annoying
Indian Bank: good service, can set UPI PIN even with Aadhaar, no customer service or banking product issues although ordinary banking products
IOB: Can't even hotlist/block debit card without writing application letter to branch
PNB: Can't reissue virtual debit card once blocked, you lose it permanently, although PNB account & CCs are good
SBI: Have been customer since 2016, don't even get me started with how many times their UPI & netbanking are down, it is worst bank and their CC although a separate company but with SBI's major stake in it, have worst customer treatment in industry, monthly automatic bank statement facility broken (for me at least)
UCO: Can't even use mobile app without DC, has no facility of monthly bank statement on email
Union: Pathetic online services, frequent failed transactions

Online Services: Indian Bank
Customer Support: Indian Bank
Banking Products: PNB account and CC are good
Mobile App: Indian Bank

Best overall: Indian Bank 👑
