Big Win with RBI Banking Ombudsman Against Big Private Bank - Rs. 94850 Compensation

I wanted to share my recent experience, which might help other members who face similar banking issues.

The Issue:
In Feb 2025, while traveling to Hong Kong, my _____ Bank credit card was repeatedly declining without any valid reason. It caused me a lot of inconvenience. After returning to India, I immediately wrote to the CEO’s desk explaining what happened and demanded that the issue be fixed permanently.

However, in March 2025, during another trip to Hungary, the same thing happened again. To make matters worse, one restaurant staff mocked me when my card declined and said, “3rd world country people.” This was deeply humiliating.

Action Taken:
After returning, I filed a formal complaint with the RBI Banking Ombudsman, asking for compensation for my expenses and the hardship I faced.

  • Initially, my case was closed.
  • I appealed and requested an offline hearing.
  • I visited the Ombudsman office in my state, explained everything in detail, and demanded fair compensation.
The Outcome:
A few days later, I received confirmation from both the RBI and the bank. They agreed to pay me ₹94,850 as compensation for mental harassment.

My Thoughts:
While this compensation doesn’t erase the embarrassment I went through, it does prove one thing — if you fight for your rights, you can get justice.

Note: I’m not revealing the bank’s name here (they specifically requested me not to share this case publicly on social media).

Takeaway for Members:
  • If you face similar issues with your bank/credit card, don’t ignore it.
  • Document everything and escalate properly.
  • Approach the RBI Ombudsman if the bank doesn’t resolve it.
  • Appeal if your case is dismissed — persistence matters.
Your consumer rights are protected. You just have to stand up for them.

Congrats on fighting back and fighting hard!

Just curious, how many emails/calls and visits in total did it take to receive the compensation?
(so that the readers can be prepared when fighting such battles)

that's a huge against such a big bank like ICICI. Can you elaborate more on what happened during this entire timeline?
I can see that the case went for a long time and included physical visits too.

Just to add some more information - I sent two emails to the bank and two to the RBI Banking Ombudsman, that’s it. But yes, it still took almost six months to finally resolve the matter.

This might be the reason this bank fixed my recent international transaction. Which kept failing, so i tried different card. The next day i got a message and call saying that your issue is fixed and retry the transaction with same card and it worked. 😁

How did you prove that your card was declined in many countries?
