Cancellation of SBI ELITE card and its impact on hotel bookings

I have a Diners Club Black credit card (which is a lifetime free card) and an Axis Magnus card. Today, only IDFC Bank confirmed over the phone that they would provide me with the IDFC First Wealth card, which is also a lifetime free card.

This is compelling me to cancel my SBI Elite card. However, I have already used my SBI Elite card to book two Accor Hotels in Portugal and paid for them. I inquired with the hotel if I could cancel my SBI Elite card without any issues, and they replied as follows:

"The credit card used for payment for the reservation must be presented at the time of check-in. If you don't have the credit card, we will refund the amount to that credit card, and you must pay directly at the hotel."

It seems strange, but that's what they told me. Do you have any suggestions or a way out of this situation?

Nope
The hotel executive said it wrong
Cc used while booking any hotel room is for a safety purpose to them supposedly if we are not going to stay but at the same time we forget to cancel the booking they charge some amount to card and no way we can’t raise dispute since we made mistake on not canceling
But ur case where u paid already and transaction once settlement has reached the hotel account then no point of asking the same card for checkin it’s weird

It looks weird but I have seen this practice being followed in Europe by some of the hotels and the airlines. One of the occupants or one of travelers should hold the card that they used to book the hotel or the airline.

Is it just holding the card or do they require you to make remaining payment using that card? If you just need the physical card then even after closing it will be with you right?

It's for authentication purposes i.e. the person who booked the hotel is the same person staying at the hotel.

Never thought of the workaround or other alternative!
