Cybercrime in Banking: Protecting the Public or Punishing the Innocent?

So many sad stories, continuing...

Yet, authorities are reluctant to act appropriately.

Any precautionary measures?
----
This is what I do.
1. More use of wallet.
2. More use of vouchers/gift cards.
3. Avoiding UPI receiving txn as much as I can.
4. Using secondary account.
5. Sometime using 3rd party /relatives account linked with my number for UPI.
6. Immediate transfer of amount.

*Now thinking to pay income tax from that account, Rs. 100 more than weekly/monthly deposit amount. So that they can freeze income tax receiving account in next chain.

Looking for precautionary measures for saving only account holders till there is better regulation and governance.

Apay is working for me.
I don't share my UPI with strangers. No incoming, only outgoing. For upi I am planning a better way out.

Yes, for others circumstances are totally different. Those who run business, use current account.

@Ram1 Any suggestions from you for saving only account holders like me?

I am facing similar issue and my account is lien marked for transaction that is actually my wallet to my account transfer. It started with getting sms from ICICI Bank that 10000 lien marked due to police notice. Shocked I called RM and he gave one mobile number and mail ID saying that some cyber crime police of Hansi Haryana has sent that notice. I called on that number. He asked me to check my ICICI account on 28 August 25 for credit of 10000 and started asking in accusation tone kaha se aaye. Its narration is IMPS credit HDFC Bank and some reference number and Zeta Wallet HDFC Bank but no account or name of upi id sending credit I couldn't recollect immediately as I never heard of Zeta wallet and told him I don't know. He said some fraud of 70000 has happened and number of transactions happened and one is traced to my account. I thought maybe wrong credit I may not have noticed. He says transfer this to account number he will give and lien will be lifted. I googled for Zeta wallet and realised it is platform used by HDFC for payzapp. Later when I started searching for 10000 transactions and I found it was actually my HDFC Payzapp wallet to ICICI account transfer. I called him and told him this is own account transfer. He forwarded me one excel sheet which shows debit and credit account and some transaction reference number. According to him these details he got from NPCI for that reference number which is mentioned as RRN in that sheet. Credit account is mine and debit account is HDFC Bank which maybe some pool account for Payzapp wallet. Now I called HDFC Bank Payzapp. They say there is no RRN for wallet to account transfer and only their reference number. That reference number is appearing in both Payzapp debit and ICICI Credit details. I have sent both statements to that mail ID but now 4days gone no response and phone once picked he says will see. Now this is strange how my own wallet to account transfer becomes suspicious transaction!! Is it due to some pool account used by HDFC Payzapp wallet? No answers. This is my main operating account and I am not using it out of fear that tomorrow they may not freeze account or lien mark higher amount. If I don't get further response, where and whom to raise this grievance? ICICI simply wash off saying police notice they won't do anything.

This also means anyone using Payzapp wallet or maybe any other wallet can become victim for even own account transfer. Really I am now wondering should I delete all those wallet accounts created for convenience.

Never activate UPI for your primary account, only use NEFT. Do not use this account for any payment to any unknown person. Prefereably, this account should be linked to a mobile that is not your primary mobile.
For UPI, use phonepe GV loaded via credit card or amazon wallet loaded via DC or any SFB Acct loaded via NEFT. Never keep more than 2K in these and use UPI only for less than 500 txn. For all larger txn use only card or UPI-CC.

There must be some issues at NPCI end or at the end of the person who raised the complaint. We all do wallet to account transfer.

Every payzapp wallet to account txn are imps txn (non UPI). There must be some imps reference number. In your case that is causing issue.

Complainant or NPCI must have given a wrong reference number. The reference number that they are now dealing with is actually belongs to you.

Looking at your case, it could be a case of fake complaint or IMPS glitch (superimposition) if reference numbers are same and both transactions are valid.

All imps txn are supposed to be linked to mobile number. But for Payzapp as I have recently noticed shows as **000 (checked for SBI inwards). For RBL and HDFC no mention as such.

i faced similar issue, got noc from police, but problem is bank is not unfreezing. when asked why they say they acknowledge the noc but asking "receipts" about some other random transactions all of which were between my family members and friends and one restaurant. i told them i cant provide receipts for these kind of personal transaction, they are copy pasting same content in email. i have around 1.5 lakh that got stuck

file a writ bro and get that from court then bank also won't be able to stop .. if they do so attach everything file a case against bank and even put on rbi Ombudsman

bro that will take years to solve and multiple cost from my end. since i already for the noc from police. now bank has no legal authority of freezing and police also saying talk with bank. now as per current status, there is no legal requirement for bank to freeze and they also acknowledged receiving the noc from police in email. i wanted to know if there is anything from rbi rule they have violated.

problem went like this BankAccount1 had disputed amount, police froze BA1(mentioning that transaction) and BA2 (blanket freeze). then after talking with police, they issued noc for both BA1 and BA2. BA1 has fully unfroze and removed the lien. But B2 is saying they got noc, but their internal team finds some irregularities and therefore they have froze it from their end. actually B2 is only used for personal transfers, there are at most 4-5 persons only i sent or received and the nearby restaurant bill i paid once for a friends treat. BA1 and BA2 are different banks. how police obtained BA2 thats unrealted to BA1 i dont know. but on phone when i asked they said they will be able to get all accounts a person has.

Problem is how to make this police guy understand all this. All I can show is one transaction reference both in ICICI and Payzapp wallet being same but he is looking at different reference no which only appears in ICICI account. He says this is RRN but when I contact Payzapp they deny there is any RRN for wallet to bank transfer.

Then it could be his misunderstanding causing a probable misleading investigation. Ask him one thing how can a transaction has two reference number? The bank sending the funds generates RRN not the bank who receive the fund. Also ask him to corroborate with NPCI, ICICI, HDFC (Payzapp) as you have provided everything you have on this.

Share with him debit as well as credit (I guess u already did that) transaction statement and screenshot in writing through email to prove it's a self transfer and nothing illegal.

Mark same email to ICICI, HDFC and NPCI, together. Wait 7 days.

Then be ready for RBI ombudsman for inconvenience due to banks negligence also copy to that police's higher official till ministry level.

It's easier said than done. Practically dealing such things is too difficult. It consumes so much time and energy.

is this number visible on ur account? what transaction is this different no for?
My payzapp wallet debit shows one transaction reference which is also appearing in ICICI credit with another number in format abc/xyz ..Now this number abc he is calling RRN. I did bit of search on RRN is unique number given by sending bank for IMPS and there is format. This number abc tallies with RRN format. Apart from that his data has sender account number and payer account number bank and IFSC codes. Credit details are obviously my ICICI account and debit bank details are probably HDFC pool account for Payzapp. I called Payzapp to share RRN for particular transaction to prove it beyond any doubt but they say for wallet to bank transfer there is no RRN and only their reference id and confirmed that amount is credited to ICICI account.
Any case I have shared both bank statements showing that debit and credit are matching with same reference number and time stamps. Latest he picked up phone and now said will check with NPCI and if confirmed will release lien but I suspect that will take its own sweet time.
