During my travel, acceptance was an issue at some places. You need discover machines for acceptance. At bigger places acceptance may not be an issue. Smaller shops may have a problem. Also try to have some currency in hand since they will have a minimum at some places, and also might charge you a little transaction cost if you pay by cards.

Apparently it's no big deal for merchants to pass MDR on the customer in EU and NA

Diners acceptance is bad in france for normal shopping, public transport tickets and eat outs. Credit cards are accepted almost in every shop but only visa/mastercard/CarteBlanche. I haven't seen any transaction fees in the receipts. I have been able to use diners black only in luxury shops till now such as coach and guess outlets. So, carry cash and a backup card along with diners.

Thank you for the tip. Transaction costs or MDR is not an issue. I am thinking of predominantly using DCB credit card with some Euro cash. If so, I can eliminate the need for forex card. In the past it was always visa or MasterCard, so didn't faced acceptance issues.

If you have visa or mastercard with low forex markup then forex card is not required. Since, I have an account in IDFC, I preferred to take wow credit card which have 0% forex charges. I know there are better cards than this but that was the easiest to get with a fd without any hassle and cibil hit.

Also if you plan to go via HDFC card, read about GVP. This is actually beneficial. Will pay for itself. Check it out.

Thanks for your pointers for France as well forex charges. DCB is 2% markup and I will get 1% as cashback till some value with GVP. My wife has Regalia which is also same and it is Visa. Hope this will cover it.

And does anyone know whether HDFC blocks cards unnecessarily due to security reasons during international travel as I read ICICI does it regularly??

They havent blocked my DCB yet in the last 4 months. I am using diners with paypal for online shopping, food ordering apps and cabs and offline shopping wherever applicable.

How is the acceptance rate of Diners in Europe in 2024?
I am visiting Germany 4N, Switzerland 8N and Paris 3N. I have activated GVP on my DCB. Also have niyo card as backup.
How much cash should I take with me?
I am planning to take around 800 francs and 500 euros.
