Hi

Sorry I couldnt find the right sub-forum to put this. Please move if required.

For my upcoming family trip to Dubai, I am planning to leverage my Magnus card exclusively for expenses. Taking about a 1000 dirham cash too.

But is Dubai easy with credit card acceptance or is that a challenge and need to carry more cash?

I visited last year and VISA(I had a Visa Magnus) cards were usable everywhere, even inside local cabs. While 1000 AED is more than enough for emergencies, make sure you have a debit card/INR to exchange for AED if you want to buy gold(most sellers will charge some percentage points extra if you pay via credit card)

Thanks.. This helps

Recently been last month. Just carry 1000 AED more than enough. Card acceptance is really good.

If buying gold then carry cash else no need

Thanks everyone @_Mayank_ @vibhorgupta96 @Anupama_Jha

One more question - Is alcohol easily available bottled and in bar? Restrictions? Should I buy and carry while exiting airport (cumbersome) or it can be bought from supermarkets just like the uS?
You can order it through Noon Minutes (Blinkint/Instamart for UAE) - which will deliver it to your hotel or place of residence. Noon and Noon Minutes will work with your Indian number too.

There is absolutely no issues with card acceptance.
If you have HDFC cards, especially DCB/Infinia, then activate GVP (Global Value Program) and do your spends through it.

Carry bare minimum AED or you can load some money into Thomas cook forex card and use it.

Alcohol is very difficult to buy in Dubai. You can definitely drink at one of the many bars.

There are a few of places you will need cash
1) Renting a yatch (they will expect a 5% card surcharge if paying cash)
2) Buying gold
3) Buying phone

If you plan on renting a yacht (private not group tour), you will need to bring alcohol if you want (yacht operators can arrange Alcohol but prices are astronomical. Best bought from duty free)

Feel free to DM if you need contact for a private yacht at a decent price, I have the number of guy we rented from

Thank you this will really help me and not just for alcohol...I am a sucker for home delivery...I will buy the alcohol bottle from duty free itself...though the challenge is I will not be able to drink even close to the full bottle during my 10 day trip....Can I carry it back? 😛

Thanks have activated it on my infinia too and will carry that as the backup card

no plan for 1st or 3rd as of now but thanks a lot for offering to help...will reach out to you if that changes

I can see hsbc is there in dubai, so hsbc might have free atm withdrawal for foreign cards.
Nope. It doesn't work that way. Using an SBI Debit Card in the UK doesn't give you free withdrawals, even from their London Home Branch. HSBC is an independent entity in every country for the Consumer Segment.

What about these new 3000 AED Cash rules, Do you need cash, or do they make you swipe your card to check the balance/show on the phone app? 🙂

Could you link to which new rule you are refering to?
UAE started asking airlines to confirm that people have a credit card with 3000 AED limit per person (~70k INR per person). This was in May, not sure if they still do this or not. I traveled last in Dec and used VoA and was not asked anything.

One of my friend traveled last week, will ask him if this is still the case. He traveled from BLR, while most reported cases of denied boarding were in COK
