I have been thinking to post this for a while. So here it goes. On my recent international trip, I have noticed that I wasn't asked to enter any PIN to authorise cc transaction. This has happened at multiple locations in Philippines and Thailand. To make things clear, those were not contactless transactions, rather those were all EMV chip transactions. After dipping the chip and entering the amount, transaction were going through.
I kept contactless transactions OFF from app, to test it, still all chip payments were successfully paid without PIN. This wasn't the case in Malaysia where I was asked for PIN.
My question is, how is this being allowed? All these years I knew that all EMV chip based payments are chip+pin based. And, the bid question, isn't it risky? Your cc can get lost or pickpocketed and before you realise it can be too late.
My suggestion - keep all international transactions OFF while traveling in such countries. Switch on transaction right before making payment, and again disable payment as soon as payment is complete.
