Hi TF members,

Recently went for Gold Purchase to Jos Alukas. On the top of the final bill they are charging additional 4% if we are planning to use AMEX card. If not agreed, they are rejecting to accept the Amex card for swiping. Has Anyone faced the same issue, is this normal across all jewellers like GRT, Joy Alukas, Tanishq, Malabar, Thangamayil ?

Could someone please provide clarification if this is how they charge for Amex Cards ?

Thanks !

I am new to these Cards, and wish to know more on these Charges. Is this legal for the Merchants to put that on customers bill if its their charge ?
Is this for all other purchases too(Clothes, dining, electronics etc...) ?

Please confirm

reach out to their corporate head office by phone call/email. complain that their outlet is adding additional charges for cc, which is illegal.

As suggested, you can complaint. Else, you can use CC Skins to hide that it's amex 😉😛
I would stick with another card. I dont want to deceive others 🙂.

There was another incident. In one of the Local Supermarket, when i used Amex it worked last month. When i used this month, it throws an error,"Amex Transactions not enabled" or something like that... Is anyone aware, if the card usage can be restricted by Merchants in POS by manually disabling it ?

Note: Same happened in one of the HP Fuel outlet as well.

What can be the solution for these issues, Please let me know your thoughts !!!

Yes, Amex can be disabled by merchants.

Last month I purchased Gold from Tanishq, no issues, they accepted my DCB METAL without any hassle. And if I remember correctly, I think the charges (MDR) for Diners Club are same as Amex. Still no issues. So complain to the head office or customer care.

It's up to the jewellery merchant. In my experience as well, I've seen jewellers charging extra for Amex. There's no point complaining as they are in their right to accept/reject certain modes of payment. However, 4% seems a bit too high. I buy from VBJ regularly and they charge 1% addl for Amex. So perhaps you can negotiate, there's no other way

So there are no additional charges if we buy from Tanishq using Amex ?
If anyone aware of anyother shop also, pls comment here.

thanks !
