Google Chrome fined $5 billion for spying on users in Incognito mode in browser
Do you use Incognito mode in Chrome for whatever reason 🙈 Congrats...Google knows your each and every click.
Context: Earlier Google advertised their INCOGNITO MODE as totally user friendly and only the user knows what he/she searched and no data was stored anywhere...not on device nor on cloud. But they did!
The incident tracks back to 2020 where multiple users claimed that Google was tracking them in Incognito mode but as would any company do...they outright rejected.
In response, the users filed a class action lawsuit demanding compensation and breach of privacy. Fast forward to 2024, 5 February, California court found them guilty of spying and fined them. Initially, they rejected the accusations but eventually admitted to spying on users. They were ordered to settle each user with $5000 but settled for lumpsum $5 billion and now will be destroying the stored data upto today.
If you don't know, Google can also see your gallery to search for Child P#rngra#phic content. That means they can scan your phone out of suspicion too!
Time and time again, the technology we use further compromise the user's privacy. Much of transactions are online, we are only a breach away from potential frauds, threats, blackmailing or a ransomware. And there's no solution to this, as you have to be using these services to use internet. Having monopoly surely does brings dictatorship!
P.S : After this incident, Google now display a fine print to let user know that only other users of the device may not track their search history but Google still can!😵💫
