DCB HDFC automatically upgrading DCB plastic to metal in back end?

I recently booked a hotel for 2 nights for a total of about 10000 and received 3345 RP on smartbuy. This checks out at 10x reward points. However, DCB plastic had a daily cap of 2500 9x reward points which it didn't seem to hit. Is HDFC upgrading the plastic to metal without actually shipping the metal card? Which means the fee waiver has also increased.

This is unusual, just consider yourself lucky !
I don't think your card has changed automatically without any notice
Maybe not. But the smartbuy portal says paid with DCB metal while I can still see the upgrade option on the app to DCB metal which I am not accepting by choice. It is a possibility that they are discontinuing dcb plastic altogether.

HDFC has discontinued DCB plastic, they are not issuing it anymore.

It's most likely an system issue. They need to notify any change to the cc. They can't upgrade without your consent. And they definitely can't treat existing cc as an upgrade.
DCB pvc & DCBm have similar nnames, but they are indeed 2 different product. Even though infinnia pvc and infinnia metal have same reward/Fee structure, they are also different product.

most likely they will find out after sometime and adjust it.

just fyi, my brother got emails/text to upgrade his acclero card of icici, he didn't pay attention. Now in feb 2025, his card expired and icici just send him msg the card has been closed. So if HDFC discontinue's a card and let's say your expiration of the card is april 2026, then if u don't upgrade before that, hdfc will close your dcb plastic and u will need to apply as a fresh application (not pre approved).

I have 4 lifetime free ICICI cards for many years now.
(I don't use any of them at all, I would like ONLY a paid Emerald private metal, not even a paid Times Black)

But whenever any one of these 4 expires, I automatically get a new one without any email for upgradation

pricing change from LTF to paid
I think you should go for the metal and fulfil the spend criteria to get the fee waiver. You have to do 5L for the plastic and 8L for the metal which is and additional 25K per month.

I think they will warn you that the card is being discontinued. Only in case of non usage they close your card without notice.

That's normal if the card is still available. My Regalia and Union Signature used to get renewed without any mail.

Incidentally 2 of my cards got closed due to non usage.
First was my Bobcard BPCL. Bobcard was my first ever credit card. Was some basic one. It was upgraded to BPCL. Once I got the HDFC Card (Don't remember which one) I stopped using the Bobcard. They renewed it once and then closed it.
Same happened with my SBI Card.
I wish I had continued with the Bobcard. Would have been my oldest card.
