How to learn about personal finance?

Hello Everyone, I'm intrigued by the world of finance and investing. In the past, I invested around 3-4 lakhs in the stock market, and luckily, my investments have yielded positive results. However, I attribute my initial success more to luck, as my decisions were made with minimal research. Currently, I'm excited about delving into the realm of mutual funds, SIPs, and related subjects. I'm facing a dilemma: should I embark on a self-education journey or seek out professional investment advice? It's worth noting that I have limited knowledge in this domain. I would greatly appreciate any insights you can offer, especially considering the wealth of expertise within our technofino community.

If it is not allowed mods may delete the thread. 🙂

Tbh answer depends on what you want to do actually?

If you just want to earn better returns, then seek professional investment advice.

If you are intrigued by the world of finance and specifically investing, it would be helpful to learn by yourself. Check out Real P&L for day trading kind of stuff and Aswath Damodaran for risk calculations in various financial instruments. Word of caution, don't go by most popular people on youtube for this stuff, most of them are bad, like you would be much better off just shooting blind then to check them out.

If you actually want to be competent enough to be able to manage things for someone else too, check out some of the finance courses on edx and complete them. Also you would need to pick a niche and kinda go deep into it for this.

There is a youtuber named coffeezilla who had another youtuber Patrick Boyle who teaches finance at some college in London and previously ran his own hedge fund. Patrick has experience in working for very big names in Finance including George Soros. At the end of his interview he shared some books, check them out if you only have some interest in the world of finance and investing. That could be a good place to start as it would help you access how much do you actually like this stuff. Martin Shkreli is another good source, especially for his excel skills and his live valuation stuff. I think he uploads on youtube but streams usually on twitch.

I'm truly grateful for your comprehensive reply, sir. My goal is to autonomously manage my personal finances, concentrating on their careful oversight. My top priority is to choose long-term investments, avoiding trading, and considering my limited availability due to my ongoing studies.

Martin would be best for you tbh in that case. Regardless of his past as a white collar criminal, he is a damn good analyst who knows how to present things in a way that they are easier to absorb.

Followed his YouTube channel as well as twitch. Will start investing my time from monday itself. Again thank you very much for your time and efforts sir 🙂

just learn how mutual funds work. if you have more time to spend, then only i wud suggest manage ur finances urself, else put them into funds. u don't treat urself unless u are a doctor, so give ur money to a specialist.
And rule number one is, stop watching the stupid youtubers giving financial gyan.
