Physically our bodies are weak and vulnerable post COVID (we say 'post' COVID, but are we sure?). However, there has been another phenomena post COVID that I find deeply disturbing. While even pre-COVID there would be pressure of work and people would bring work home, there was a degree of separation between the workplace and home and some amount of respect for that. With COVID and WFH, that line disappeared, and now people are expected to be available all the time, wherever they are. Earlier, you could work till late at office, but once you left office, it would be for good. No one would call you and ask you for something unless they felt it was urgent, and mostly be apologetic about it. However, now asking people to finish work at home and calling at all hours to get the most routine and mundane work done has become the norm. Infact, the person who is not able to do the office work at home feels apologetic now. This is both post work hours and weekends. Earlier, people were more patient. If a physical meeting was not possible, people would wait till it could be organised, and everyone would understand if there was a delay. Now that people have learnt everything can be done remotely and virtually, there's no patience. Everyone wants everything done 'now'. Same with when you took a day off earlier, now there's no respite. No one minds or hesitates calling anyone even on leave - oh, they must be having their laptop/Ipad/phone with them, so they can do it, it will only take a few minutes! Not that people running a business or entrepreneurs are any better off - employees have bosses and businesses have clients!
I agree that this who possibility and recognition of remote and virtual work culture has increased productivity, brought in a lot more flexibility and there are a lot of positives. But we must also be mindful of the costs and the challenges it has brought along - especially for mental health and workload related stress.
Very good topic you picked
