Looking to buy an air purifier—any recommendations? Currently considering Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Lite and Coway Airmega 150.

Open to others!

I haven't Coway 250 as well as 150..
Happy with both...

but my 2 cents - only buy an air purifier if you are living in Delhi NCR / a metro city / a place with high dust and pollution and you are living below 5th floor... If not, u really don't need it!

I live in Patna with average AQI of 300 throughout the year should I get one?

what is the filter replacement cost?
and often do we need them to change?
I haven't changed filters since the past 2 years - but they need regular cleaning..I had called the Coway service guy 3-4 months back thinking I might have to change but he said it's not required!
By the way, I stay on 10th floor in Gurugram!

I don't think you should see average AQI - I would not get it if I don't stay on main road and if I am put up above the 5th floor!
But if you feel the pollution / dust at home, get one!

Suggest to buy Coway.
Philips and Mi close the support of their models. I don't see filters now of Philips (2886 model I think). Good that I don't need it much.
Dyson is overpriced in my opinion.

Assuming pollution levels won't be high above 5th floor is a myth.

This was done by my old colleague. As per his research, he couldn't find any reasonable difference even on 16th floor.

I have a dyson and it is really good. Not sure about others.

I am no expert and didn't read most articles in detail..
But my short reading says that most dangerous particles reduces with height.. one such article by a government research supporting this;

I went through this document and there it's clearly mentioned that they have studied only the effect of NO2 and not particulate matters and they have mentioned that it might show different characteristics. Even otherwise, the reduction they're claiming happens only on places what they're classifying as roadside, which by their standards is places 5m away from road. For places 20m, they didn't see any reduction. Even on those places where there was a reduction, it was 40% on the fourth floor and no further or only a very marginal reduction beyond that even on the 9th floor. Our pollution levels are way off the chart in cities that even if we halve the pollution levels, it'll still be higher than the accepted levels.

About PM2.5, I came across https://aaqr.org/articles/aaqr-22-10-aac22-0361

Even there, the story is kind of similar. Please see attachment for more info. Basically, PM2.5 levels contributed by road traffic reduces significantly with height and by significant, they mean 20% reduction. Not reduction to 20%, but a reduction of 20%. So to say that air purifier is not needed beyond 4th floor in cities I feel is wrong.

I might have gone overboard saying that it's a myth. However, at least in cities here where we know pollution levels are generally higher by several multiples, assuming we have access to unpolluted air may not be correct.

And i meant only to ignore the floor height factor into the decision. If you're living in an area where the air pollution is known to be negligible, you won't need one. Otherwise, it's better to buy one, regardless of the floor where you're living in.
