No more spam SMS from companies!

Companies which send promotional SMS will have to take your consent before sending you any SMS.

You can now check which companies can/cannot send you an SMS.

Earlier, your service provider (eg- Airtel) would not know which companies are allowed to send you a message.

So any random company could send you a promotional message and you could not do anything but get annoyed.
With the implementation of Digital Consent Acquisition (DCA) process, the companies will ask for your consent for any promotional messages.

You will get an SMS with common short code "127xxx" with the company name and other details asking for your consent.
Only upon receiving consent, service provider (eg- Airtel) will allow these companies to send you any further SMS and calls.

You can check all the blocked/unblocked companies from your service provider app.
Yesterday companies from banking, insurance, finance and trading sectors were instructed to onboard the process.

We should expect companies from other sectors to be onboarded by 30th Nov, 2023.

News of the decade 😅

DND is a joke in India, and TRAI was never serious about it. Most genuine DND violation complaints were closed by the recipient operator claiming "Not promotional in nature." And you couldn't escalate it to TRAI either.

And if you raise too many DND complaints, the SMS service providers/gateways would block your number, so you would stop getting even important SMSs. It happened many times with me until I researched about its cause. Now I manually request companies to stop sending me any unsolicited promotional SMS (spam) on my number.

Furthermore, all the telecom operators in India are using the DLT tech and anti-spam filter of a private company called Tanla, and they are also the biggest SMS service provider/gateway in India with their child company called Karix Mobile. So, essentially, they have a monopoly on it.

I don't mind marketing SMS messages. Just can't tolerate marketing calls. DND app so far helped removing marketing calls. Even HDFC credit card spammers stopped calling after a series of complaints via DND app by TRAI.
How long have you been sending reports via the DND app? And approximately how many complaints have you raised so far?

And are you now getting SMS from every company normally? Or are you missing many important SMS alerts now?

I only report gambling and such other sms, I am fine with others (banks/cc/shops/etc)

But I do report calls of CC agents (and any other automated calls)

Btw, is there a way to know whether service provider/gateway has blocked my number ?

As, in the past (assume 1+ year ago), I had seen 1 post somewhere which stated that the person also stopped receiving OTP and other messages (even private sms) as he was reporting each and every SMS on TRAI DND app (similar to what you said) 😅

Probably using the app for over 2 years. Earlier, I used to get too many calls on my primary number. I changed my primary number just to avoid those calls.

Probably I made around 100 complaints. At a rate of 1 complaint per week. However, almost all complaints are for promotional calls. Also the frequency has come down now. Probably, one complaint per month these days.

Now I don't get promotional calls on either number.

In September, I applied for HDFC CC. Got offers from multiple DSAs for nearly two months. After complaining, no more promotional calls this month.

And are you now getting SMS from every company normally? Or are you missing many important SMS alerts now?

No for both questions.

Nope. The companies usually use multiple SMS gateways to send SMS communication, and they wouldn't reveal it to you.

To resolve this: I usually escalate the issue to their CTOs and VPs in the tech department instead of their customer care, and they usually handle the case internally without explicitly responding back to you.

For instance, I was not getting any SMS from Voot around 3 years ago. Tried for over a year, and none of the times I was getting any OTP from them. Their Customer Care, as usual, wasted my time. So, I escalated the case to their leadership team in the tech department. Even though I had received no reply from anyone, but within weeks, I noticed that my problem was resolved.

I have one suggestion for you though: if you're still experiencing the SMS-related issue, then turn off your DND from your telecom operator's respective app/website, and keep it off for at least 6 months. Then turn on "Full DND" after 6 months instead of "Block promotional communication only." It might unblock your number eventually from various SMS gateways.

And stop reporting DND violations until this new circular of consent comes into effect.
