OTP SMS Spamming

Today for the second time I faces Spamming of OTPs on my mobile number and the similar thing I faced on 20th November 2024.

I know that there is an app/website that does this and if your number is entered into that then you are bombarded with 100s of OTPs from various different brands like Flipkart, Meesho, Tata Neu etc.

So I called up Airtel Black Relationship Team while I was receiving these SMS and the solution they gave was to simply turn off my phone for 5-10 mins and check if SMSes are stopped and they didn't had any better solution than this.

So after getting irritated I had to put my phone on Airplane mode thinking that maybe some friend of mine might have done but didn't know of any such friend who would perform such childish stuff and after sometime when I turned off the airplane mode I got sms from Airtel that there is a missed call and I checked that number on Truecaller and it was some "Hotstar OTP Scam".



So then I realised that this is not done by someone known but done by actual intention of scamming but I want to know what type of scam it is and how does it work. I would have picked up this call if I wasn't on Airplane mode to know more.

Did something like this happened with anyone else?

But I don't think, names on Truecaller are always correct. This number could be of some tele promoter. Or some automated calls.

Have u check comments under this number.

It happens with me today wherein some tele caller got mad at me because I called him "Mad" for calling DND registered number.

All airtel team help is they register my number in to there anti spam control list, and promised that I will not receive such otp bombarding again.

Previously (23 Feb 2025) happened with one of family member late night around 2 AM almost 10-20 sms, came within 1-2 seconds from different brands registration and 1 from tata motors and 1 from maruti test drive, 1 from true value
SIM of Jio Network, No such issues afterwards.

Someone truly loves you 😇 search google for 'SMS bomb'
This tactic is also employed by hackers to mask their targeted otp but thats unlikely in your case.

Now I am thinking, are these companies aware that people are using their name and if they are not aware then it is a defamation.

What's the issue behind it ? Random or data leak
