I just wanted to know what is the appropriate way to dispose expired/cancelled passports. My idea was to simply rip off the glossy coated PII sheets and then get rid of the booklet. But is that an accepted way to do it, if not the right way?
You should always keep your last expired passport... embassies sometimes ask for them for verification.
It is common and often useful to retain cancelled passports as proof of travel history, so consider keeping it in a safe place instead of destroying.
Forgot to add. The person in question has no travel history, nor has any intention or need to travel. They just got a passport as an additional proof of identity.
As @TechnoFino mentioned, passport is a very important document that should never be discarded, whether it's expired or fully used. It is mandatory to keep it with you.
There will be lot of repercussions like filing an FIR in police station etc.. It’s a very lengthy process
Apart from what mentioned above, it will be proof of citizenship. I read somewhere aadhar may not be proof of the same but passport is. You should consider keeping it, it might be required any time.
