My card is up for annual fee payment next month, has anyone been able to pay annual charges using existing reward points. I have done this with Amex so was wondering if this is possible with HDFC?

not possible as you will get same points back as renewal benefits..

You can use your points as Statement credit or Smartbuy or vouchers purchase. Go through the below image.
