Payment Through CCAvenue Showing Different MCC on Different Cards

I have a question regarding MCC (Merchant Category Code) changes when paying through CCAvenue. I have two active gold chits at a local jeweller who has an app for paying monthly installments, and the payment gateway used is CCAvenue.

For my first payment, I used a Tata Neu Infinity Credit Card, and the MCC displayed as Retail. This seemed unusual, so I decided to tried ATLAS for my second payment.

But this time, the MCC changed to Gold/Jewellery, and the merchant name appeared as the jeweller itself.

This got me wondering: How does CCAvenue determine the MCC for transactions? Does it dynamically change based on the card type, bank, or some other factor?

If anyone has insights into how CCAvenue assigns different MCCs for the same merchant but with different cards, please share your experience!

Thanks! 😊

As per my assumption, it's not linked with card type or bank, the app has multiple payment gateways. One with Retail has another mcc code while 2nd one with Jweller name has another, or maybe both can have same MCC code but with different names.

It's done to keep servers working even during heavy traffic.

Same is with phonepe, Amazon, and almost every sites.

Cc Avenue don't determine MCC, but the Merchant's business category does. They have a master list of all mcc with respective category names and are alotted while onboarding.

But every single time when I enter atlas details,it shows jewellers name and for Tata infinity it shows retail. Tried multiple times. If only I able to crack it I would freaking save 400 on 10000 payment using atlas.

Are card networks of both atlas and infinity similar or different?
