Devaluation SBI Air India Cards Accelerated Rewards Devalued

SBI has sent out an email today announcing a limited devaluation.

Whats new?

Starting 31 March 25, card holders will not receive the current 30 reward points for every 100 Rs. spent purchasing tickets on Air India for self.

This will reduce to 10 reward points per Rs. 100.

Round 1?

This is the second wave of devaluation after the initial measures that started in December when they have started levying a charge of 1% on utility transactions of over Rs. 50,000 in a statement cycle.

Who's impacted?

If you are someone with who frequently buys tickets for self on Air India, this is going to hit you pretty bad. For the rest of the users, like me, who use the card for other spends and accumulate points for redemption on Air India, nothing changes.

Should you still keep this card?

Despite the two rounds of devaluation this remains a very good card. Regular spends (non-excluded categories) yield 4 reward points per Rs. 100 spent. Which is a very good reward rate considering a value of Rs 0.50, making it effectively 2% value back for redemption. (I've gotten at least Rs 0.65 per point for my redemptions)

But,

What's great about this card are the milestone benefits at 3 levels:

20,000 bonus points for Rs 5 lakh
30,000 bonus points for Rs 10 lakh
50,000 bonus points for Rs 20 lakh

And, you get reward points for utility spends too although there's a 1% charge beyond 50k per statement cycle.

That's phenomenal value back which very few cards give.
