As per the RBI guidelines, your RBL Bank Credit Card will be suspended on 10-Dec-24 due to non-usage for more than a year. Your Card has a Credit limit of Rs. 28000.0 and you are missing out on various benefits on your card. Make a valid purchase across any merchants before 10-Dec-24 to avoid blocking of your Card."
I earlier had Edition Card with RBL which was later converted to Shoprite. This card is pretty much useless and I have not been using it for long. It is LTF though. Couple of months back, RBL reduced my credit limit from more than 2 Lakhs to about Rs 28K. Now I am getting the above email.

It was anyway in my todo list to close this card, but I havent gotten around to it. Now, should I just let it play out and let RBL suspend the card or should I proactively call them to close it? Is there any difference between the two?

Posting it here, since it is a generic question, not specific to RBL.

I generally don't close cards unless they are paid and I am not using them.
Even then, I keep some cards where it makes sense e.g. I have a RBL Fun+ card that gives me 2 tickets every month on 5k spend.
So that's my goto card for wallet loads etc. that don't earn rewards generally, but these days wallets aren't popular, so it's lying around with me, but I keep it since this card is no longer issued and the fee is Rs500 and easy to get waived .
For LTF cards, just adding them to Swiggy/Zomato and deleting them once a year will keep them active, so it's not that hard to maintain.
And you get a longer credit history and lower credit utilisation ratio that improves your credit score .

1. It's better to get it closed. Easiest way + less headache to track.
2. Like Technofino had an article, pay Rs 10 and let them generate bill every month for negative 10. That way, though it is inactive they can't suspend it because you have some extra amount lying in it.
3. Call customer care and ask for higher variant LTF.
4. Ask them if they suspend, do you need to pay anything to activate it later or close it later. What are the next steps after suspension ?
