Upcoming major expenses - which card should I put them on?

kaykayporty

TF Select
I'm going to have to purchase a lot of stuff for a new place I'll be moving into. Plus, some other expenses also.

What I'm looking for in this thread?
  1. Advice for extracting maximum value out of these spends
  2. Which card to use first or use partially?
---

Expenses later in the year (not house related)
  • Health insurance premium - May 2025
    • 20,000 (approximately) for 1 year
    • 40,000 (approximately) for 2 years
  • Income Tax - late June/early July
    • I'm guessing 10-12K

Housing expenses (payment in the next few weeks):

Moving charges5000
Mattress20000
Fridge25000
Washing machine24000
Bed15000
Total89000

---

Cards I want to put these spends on

  • Amex Platinum Travel
    • Rs. 102000 away from 4L milestone
    • This needs to be done by 3rd July.
  • Axis Atlas
    • Total spends till date: Rs. 40500
    • I just got the card a few weeks ago.

---

What should I pay with what and when?
  • I was thinking I'll do part of the housing expenses with AMEX - which should be around 70K.
    • Keep some buffer for insurance.
    • Not sure if I'll be able to pay taxes in this milestone year.
  • Put the rest of the expenses on the Axis Atlas - around 25K.
    • There are items not on the list also but not big enough to count as a major item.

Offline- atlas
Online like insurance - amex plat travel

Can you please elaborate why? Offline acceptance of AMEX isn't an issue from where I would be buying.

What if I buy all of them online?
AtlAs gives 4% directly offline without any calculation for redemption into other miles or royality

Amex u can anyways complete 4 lakh on online spends where atlas doesn't give reward.

Hitting milestones on the Plat Travel card feels great!

But it feels even better when you hit them with spends that aren't rewarded elsewhere.
Insurance, taxes and other things can be paid with it.

Atlas for all other categories that it gets the reward points for.

Another suggestion is to get another Amex Plat Travel in your wife's/friend's/family member's name, now you have twice as many reward points on 8L annual spends which will be way higher than Travel + Atlas combined.

Should I leave a buffer of 30K for insurance and taxes and finish off expenses on my Plat Travel first and use Axis for everything else?

Pay 70K on my Plat Travel.

Remaining 20K on Axis Atlas.

Whenever there is tax/insurance time, I bring out the plat travel again.

Yeah, but that would still leave 70K on the table.

I'll prefer Axis for buying housing stuff but I'll double check the MCC code.

I guess some people had issues with Reliance digital because they used the Jewelry MCC code.

Yeah, Reliance Digital may have some issue. Check and then make payments.

If you're still 70K short from hitting the 4L milestone what you can rather do is, buy Reliance Digital vouchers from Amex Gyftr which will give you 3x points and then make the payments and whatever left can be done through Axis Atlas. If you have doubt over MCC for Atlas, then may consider buying Reliance Digital Gift Cards from Tata Neu App through Axis Atlas Card for the rest amount and then make the payments.

Gotcha, I'll keep that in mind.

Any other retailer that does this wrong MCC nonsense?

Couldn't recall much, but I remember when I transacted on Yatra using my SBI SimplyClick Card expecting 2.5% rewards on the transaction (Yatra being 10X points partner) but surprisingly got the regular 1.25% (5X rewards) on online transaction. I booked flights on Yatra. When enquired, it appeared Yatra used Railway MCC and therefore not eligible for 10X reward points. I escalated it till SBI Card Customer Service Head but they didn't budge.

Simply just use amex where you can. Else use atlas. These spends will not give 5x on atlas so amex gets priority

Update:

Got the best deal via Reliance Digital and used my AMEX Plat Travel. I was too lazy to get vouchers via GYFTR. Its counting towards the milestone anyway.

Didn't want to risk Atlas with the wrong MCC as I didn't know if the store had the same issue.
