What can happen if I reject Diners Metal after applying for it myself?

Hi all! I needed a monthly limit higher than 4lakhs per month on my Regalia Gold card. HDFC RM told me I will need to upgrade card itself, as limit cannot be increased otherwise. So I applied for Diners Metal. The card got approved and delivered to me. I have not activated the card yet.

After that I read the helpful posts on this community that this 14-digit card on Discover provider has low acceptance rates in various offline/online cases, as well as it does not support contactless payment via mobile app, which is important for me.

So I am thinking to reject this card for now, as I don't have any other premium Visa card with me for backup. Also I don't want hassle tracking which card to use where.

So I want to ask if I don't activate this card and let it auto close after 90 days, is that fine? Would that affect my CIBIL score or the future chance of upgrading to cards like Infinia?

Thanks!

It won't affect CIBIL score, it will be closed and you no longer (most possibly, never done by myself) have any HDFC card as per below rule:

On card upgrade, the existing card features will become invalid and the features of the upgraded card will apply. Credit card once upgraded cannot be downgraded / transferred back to the old credit card variant. Credit card once upgraded with prior customer consent cannot be re-instated to the old credit card number. Once upgraded, transactions done on the old credit card will reflect in the new card statement.

Yes, future chances of Infinia reset to 0 and it depends on your RM or your income based now.

Better use it and deal with RM to upgrade Infinia or apply floater card along with this DCB.

Thanks for your suggestions guys! I have activated the card for now. I was not aware of the facility of floater cards, and I will apply for one soon. For now for smaller transactions I have an Amazon Pay ICICI Visa card that I'll use.

From personal experience of having 2 Diners in the family and having travelled across India and a trip to Australia, I can provide the below comments on acceptance -

1. Offline acceptance issues are rare, like 1 in 50. I have used it in around 6 states in India in metro and non-metro towns and it worked everywhere. Only time it didn't work in the last 1.5 yrs was at an old but popular and budget restaurant in Mumbai. Tap2Pay sometimes doesn't work. Even if it works PIN will be required 100% of the time.

2. Online acceptance issues are less rare, like 1 in 10. Examples - Mobikwik, PayTM, MyJio, Tata Play don't accept it for recharges/bill payments, La Pino's Pizza, MCGM Property Tax site (workaround is to use HDFC's SmartPay (bill payment) service). RazorPay doesn't accept it.

3. Diners doesn't work at all in Australia.

4. Fuel Surcharge the one time I tried it at an HPCL petrol pump was way too high, over 3% I think. I got 1% back as rebate but I never dared to use it again.

For a lot of people DCB Metal is as good as Infinia. For some it is even better. For some it is slightly worse. If your online spends via Gyftr are too high or your spends in accelerated reward points categories exceed 15k a month often only then Infinia is what you need. Check this table -

P.S. - A family member was offered an Infinia Metal and DCB Plastic. After going through the T&C and features we settled on DCB and we don't regret it one bit.
