This might be a reason why your bank didn’t approve your credit card.

This post might look a bit long, but u too might have faced/overcome this problem (especially you are a south Indian/have a name with initials) & it will definitely be worth a read

This might be a reason for rejection of credit card approval for you as well as “your application does not satisfy our internal bank policy/ as your records don’t match our CKYC criteria”. You might have faced problems while studying/touring abroad/immigration/securing VISA as well.

Hi my name is SACHIN H J.

H stands for HOSAHALLY, my father's place &

J stands for JAYANNA my father's name.

I am from Mysuru Karnataka, currently residing from Chandigarh

In all my documents including Aadhar card, certificates including passport, my name is SACHIN H J.

In Aadhar Card one can fill name however one wants, no specific columns for first/middle/last name. I could easily fill it up simply as SACHIN H J

In Passport there are two spaces to fill, first one for first & middle name the other space for surname. However, the system does accept single characters & initials in the space for surname. So, I filled up first name as SACHIN & surname as H J & I got my passport successfully as it matched perfectly with my Aadhar card.

In all my certificates, (Class VI, X/matriculation, XII, yearly MBBS degree, MD degree, DM degree), my voter’s ID & my driving license too my name is SACHIN H J. No discrepancies whatsoever.

However, 15 years ago my father had got me my PAN Card. There my name it is written as

First name HOSAHALLY

Middle Name JAYANNA

Last Name SACHIN.

I was naturally enraged when I found out three years back when I started filing my ITR. However, after a lot of searching I found out that if I want my name to be SACHIN H J printed(according to the horde of youtube videos I watched) this will be the order to fill up. It was irritating when I started to get calls from banks who used to address me as “Hello Mr. Hosahally”. Zerodha sends me weekly statements which start as “Mr. HOSAHLLY here is your statement…”. All of these constantly reminding me of this problematic error.

This causes AADHAR Card PAN Card mismatch.

Many bank account & credit card applications get rejected by default. Citi Bank, Bank Of Baroda, and Niyo global card companies have so far rejected my applications so far. My paytm citi card has been rejected 3 times over past 4 years. BOB I had applied three months back and I have been unable to apply again. When I wrote to their emails (that I found here on this website) they replied giving me non specific answers. However when I asked NIYO support what exactly do they mean by CKYC criteria, they did reply to my mail telling me that since their records are completely digital & based on PAN card, they were unable to onboard me as my Aadhar name did not match with Name on PAN CARD.

People from banks call me & address me as Hi Mr. HOSAHALLY which was funny initially, but now has become irritating.

For all these reasons, I am considering to expand my initials to have a last name (with/without a middle name)

I am considering 4 options

1. SACHIN HOSAHALLY

This will be a simple two-word name
But this would mean I drop my father's name from my name

2. SACHIN JAYANNA

This will be a simple two-word name
But this would mean I drop my place name

This would mean my last name will be my father's name
Is it correct to have father's name as last name/surname?

3. SACHIN HOSAHALLY JAYANNA

This would seem most natural because in all my documents (except PAN Card) my name is SACHIN H J & I would simply be expanding my name.
But this would also mean my middle name is the name of my place & My last name/surname is my father's name.

Is it correct to have father's name as surname/last name?

Is it cumbersome to have middle names? Isn’t it just simple and fine two have a two word name (like SUMANTA MANDAL, no questions asked, no problems anywhere) or is it OK to have a three word name?

What is the maximum number of characters that one can get printed on a credit card? Is middle name printed on credit cards?

4. SACHIN JAYANNA HOSAHALLY

This would mean my father's name will be my middle name and my last name/surname will be my place name.

Many of my friends suggested that this is the correct method. However, this means shuffling of initials (to J H instead of H J)and a quite drastic change wherever my name is SACHIN H J (which is literally everywhere) which will not match with SACHIN J H & I will need to get it changed in all my bank accounts & get replacement of all my credit cards and change my name in all my bank & credit card accounts. (My email id also is sachin.h.j.69@gmail.com)

Please provide me the right counsel and advice.

I would love not just the legal advice but also what is the usual convention. This is because rarely I will face legal issues. But in everyday life when people and (now softwares) process my name, it should not be seen as unconventional/ raise any doubts when I submit my applications. It should sail smooth.

Thanks in advance,

SACHIN H J

You can visit an TIN centre near your location and get your name updated in PAN card as per your Aadhaar. Just google TIN centre address.

I have known quite a few people from Chennai who had their father's name as their surname, and their kids have his name as their surname.
Personally I think having shorter name is better. My vote would be your name + your father's name. The place would be mentioned in your Aadhaar and Passport anyways.
Keep the official docs simple and you could always introduce yourself as "Sachin Jayanna from Hosahally" to everyone you meet ;)

Hi

PAN Card does not accept single characters. I tried "H" for middle name & "J" for last name. System did not accept. I tried filling in "H J" in last name. However it does not accept space.

Did you try from TIN centre or online ?, if online search for nearest TIN centre and call them and check if they can update. Also the space in the initials do not matter much. Mine are before the first name in PAN card and after in all other documents. My KYC has never failed.

If u have read my previous post, this is an update/continuation to that.

In brief my problem is name mismatch in Aadhar & PAN DATABASE. Many of my credit card applications have gotten rejected due to this as I "do not satisfy their digital CKYC criteria" most recently Niyo global card got rejected.
Please note that in both Aadhar & Physical PAN Card name is same i.e SACHIN H J

However in PAN Database name is
First Name : HOSAHALLY
Middle Name: JAYANNA
Last name: SACHIN

I had approached PAN centre to change my name to SACHIN H J, but they said they were unable to do so as the system does not accept initials in middle & last name column. I applied for my passport & I got it done successfully with the same name as Aadhar. Luckily Passport system accepted initials in surname column.
First Name : SACHIN
Surname: H J

I went to PAN centre again & this time even though they could not force the system to accept initials they have placed a request to change the expanded names to the same order as in my Aadhar Card
First Name : SACHIN
Middle Name: HOSAHALLY
Last Name: JAYANNA

So, to sum it up, now my name in Aadhar Card is "SACHIN H J" and my name in my PAN Card is "SACHIN HOSAHALLY JAYANNA"

Do u think this will solve the problem for me??

Or do u think I will have to change my name in Aadhar Card to "SACHIN HOSAHALLY JAYANNA" in order to solve this problem permanently. (This would require a very elaborate process of legally changing my name to a form that I discussed in my previous post)

(Whatever happens to my Citi bank, BOB & Niyo global card application in future I will update i future)

Dear Sachin

I also had similar problem like you, but solved now.

Indian Naming system convention is complicated and depends on which region you come from

1) GIVEN NAME + COMMUNITY/CASTE/FAMILY NAME or GIVEN NAME + MIDDLE NAME + COMMUNITY/CASTE/ FAMILY NAME (Many North Indians follow this eg. ROHIT SHARMA or KARAN SINGH RATHORE)

2) HOUSE NAME + GIVEN NAME + MIDDLE NAME + COMMUNITY/CASTE/FAMILY NAME in any order or part thereof (Followed in many parts in south India especially in Kerala and Andhra eg KOOTHAPARAMBIL RAJESH NAIR or NIMMAKAYALA VAMSHI KRISHNA)

3) FATHERS INITIAL + GIVEN NAME + COMBINATIONS THEROEOF IN ANY ORDER ( Followed mainly in Tamil Nadu and some part of south India eg NAVEEN P or SACHIN JOYANNA

I am a native of Kerala, born and brought up in Chennai, now living in north India. Imagine how complicated my name would have been 😅. Now during my little research I came to know certain things which I would like to give you as an input which you may consider

1) Having fathers initial is not a real convention followed at many places worldwide. During 60s/70s Tamilnadu politicians advocated people to remove their surname and instead asked them to keep fathers initial in order to hide their caste. Though it sounds good move to promote equality, I personally found it stupid and conniving for many reasons which I came to know later. There were hidden agendas behind this move which I can talk at length but it will be outside the purview of this forum.

Secondly any person will always be his fathers son (or daughter) but a father and son are two different individuals so I personally doesn’t give in to the idea of carrying fathers name along with ones name. Hence I dropped my father’s initial from my name.

2) Earlier days, House was not just bricks and cement, it had a name and history and identity associated with it. That’s why people had house name along with given name. But nowadays we are living a nomadic life in a nuclear family mostly in a 1000 apartment complex. Slowly the house name concept has lost its relevance. Because of this reason I dropped the house name from my name.

Then Ideally one should have only one unique name which no other person has. But this is practically impossible. There may be few hundred Sachins in your town itself. So based on all things mentioned above , I decided to simplify my name as ‘MY INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY + MY SOCIETAL IDENTITY’ which also goes with the convention of ‘ GIVEN NAME + SURNAME’ , good for all documents and credit cards.

Now SOCIETAL IDENTITY (SURNAME) can be anything among caste, creed, clan, family name, community etc which identifies you to a particular group. This is personal choice but very important to some people as it will show the lineage to the future generation.

Therefore if I am you I would go with Sachin Hosahally or Sachin + surname. But you can decide yourself. As far as I am concerned, I went with my given name + surname. I named my daughters also in the same way. Since then I changed my name in affidavit, published in a newspaper And changed my Aadhar and PAN Card online. I am also a gazetted officer so am in the process of changing my name in the gazette of India. This gives me peace of mind as my name will be same in all legal documents especially the insurances. (Getting credit cards also will be easy 😛)

Wish you all the best

P.S All the things I mentioned above are my own interpretation and am not forcing my ideas to anyone. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your deep inputs.
I finally seem to have found someone who actualy understands my issues. My parents & my wife are scolding me for "overthinking on this topic"

I personally like SACHIN HOSAHALLY JAYANNA the best. My name has always been SACHIN H J.
I too understand that "SACHIN HOSAHALLY" will be the simplest and best of solutions.

But I Feel it difficult to drop any of those two names (HOSAHALLY & JAYANNA) :((. Reasons are emotional rather than logical.

Sir,
Can 3-word names be printed on credit cards? (SACHIN HOSAHALLY JAYANNA = 24 characters including spaces)
Will having a middle name be a problem/cumbersome?
What will be the problems that I can expect, having a 3- word name practically?
What problem can I have having my father's name as my surname as my father;s name?

I understand legally none of them are wrong. But the whole point of me changing my name would be to make everything sail smooth

My name has expanded form in Passport and PAN. Rest of all documents including aadhaar has short form with initials.
I never faced any KYC issues so far.

My last name is my father's name. I often get addressed as Mr. [Lastname] at my work and outside India.

Funny thing is, I was really not aware of expanded name scheme during passport application. So when I visited passport centre for verification, they asked for it and I said my father's full name. Now I have a long expanded name 😅.

The only data point that I can give you is, my name is 17 chars including spaces and in a lot of places there's barely any room left. If I were to rename myself, I'd keep it max 16 chars including spaces.

If I were you, I'd prolly look at "Sachin H Jayanna"
