ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card Launched - Full Details & Review

ICICI Bank is soon launching its top-tier super-premium credit card: the ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card.
Expected launch time: Mid December 2024

Fees:
  • Joining Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
  • Annual Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
Interestingly, ICICI mentions a "1st-year fee" of Rs. 20,000 + GST, similar to the Amex Centurion card's structure. It looks like the bank will charge both the joining fee and 1st-year fee at issuance, with the annual fee billed at the end of the card’s anniversary year.

However, ICICI is known for some tricky wording around card fees and waiver conditions in their MITC. For instance, I was charged an annual fee on my Emeralde Credit Card a few years back, and my consumer court case on this is still pending. (More details on that here: https://www.technofino.in/community...d-even-after-meeting-reversal-criteria.11061/)

Related Update (20th Dec, 2024):
ICICI Bank updated their MITC once again on 16th December 2024. As per the latest MITC, the first-year fee (Rs. 20,000 + GST) for the Times Black Credit Card has been removed. Customers now only need to pay Rs. 20,000 + GST at the time of joining.

This new ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card will reportedly have a sleek design, exclusive to a select group of customers. According to some sources, it’s expected to offer lifestyle perks unavailable on any other credit card in India so far.

My Opinion:
When ICICI Bank first announced the Times Black Credit Card, it was positioned as a competitor to premium cards like the Axis Primus and even the Amex Centurion. According to some ICICI Bank and Times Internet Group officials, this card was intended to challenge the dominance of the Amex Centurion in its category in India.

However, after reviewing the benefits, it is clear that this card falls short. While it does offer a few exclusive perks, such as airport transfers via helicopter, this benefit is limited to Bengaluru, making it impractical for most users. Similarly, the doorstep visa service is restricted to select locations, which diminishes its overall appeal.

As consumers, we must evaluate the real-world usability of a product's benefits. Most of the features offered by this card are inaccessible to people living outside metropolitan cities.

In terms of rewards, the card is average, offering just 2% rewards with a cap of 5,000 reward points per month on categories like utility, insurance, education, and government payments—this is a major drawback. Additionally, it does not provide rewards on fuel or rent payments, and the 1% fee on rent transactions (with only the first rent payment of the month being fee-free) further reduces its value.

But... ICICI Bank iShop Portal makes all the difference. Using this card, you can earn up to 24% rewards on iShop for flight & hotel bookings and gift voucher purchases, which significantly enhances this card’s value.

When compared to the Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card, which is available at a far lower price point, the Times Black Credit Card is noticeably inferior. It is unclear why ICICI Bank launched a product like the Times Black and placed it above Emeralde Private Metal in its lineup.

The card’s markup fee is another downside—at 1.49% + GST, it is higher than other cards in the same category, making it less competitive for international transactions.
Premium cardholders often expect a comprehensive concierge service, but ICICI Bank has imposed limits on the number of concierge services one can avail.

Despite being marketed as one of the most exclusive credit cards in India, the reality is far different. Almost everyone who already has a credit card with ICICI Bank seems to be getting approved for this card on a shared limit basis, which diminishes its exclusivity.

Overall, the Times Black Credit Card fails to deliver on the hype created by ICICI Bank and the Times Internet Group. It lacks exclusivity and practical benefits, which are expected from a premium credit card.
If you are purely looking at iShop portal spends, then you can earn significant value back using this credit card. Otherwise, this card is not at all lucrative.
You must keep in mind that you can only book flights, hotels, and buy some gift vouchers from iShop, so evaluate how much you'll spend on that before deciding whether this card makes sense for you or not.
And one major downside of ICICI Bank Credit Cards is that they don't offer airline miles transfer partners. With a few airline miles transfer partners, this card would look much better.

Would getting this card, the ICICI Times Black Card, and spending high enough amounts on it through vouchers and flight tickets, etc, make one eligible for upgrade to the ICICI EPM through purely spending criteria?

It won’t. But if you have good spending, 10+ limit and a solid RM, you can try to upgrade. Nothing guaranteed and none of such things will make you automatically eligible for EPM.

I don't get the blind hate , especially from pros in the community. It's just like amex hate , people just cling onto one thing and just shout at the top of their lungs that the card sucks .

If one doesnt have EPM or infinia etc , this card actually works extremely well to complement atlas.

If you are a traveller , and if you can't get EPM or Infinia or stuff, this card works wonders. Spend 2L and you can get most of the fees back via klook voucher and EMT voucher.

+Ve forex , works for govt spends, tax , hospitals etc and gives base reward of 2%. GV gets you 12% , utility via apay is 8% , 5L gets you avis airport transfer vouchers, unlimited domestic and international lounge access and 12k capped 0 cancellation charges benefits similar to CFAR that idfc gives. Points redeemable at 95% for flights via ishop that too you have the choice to select OTA , with 1 RP = 1 rs. Ishop also has fuel vouchers which you put effort gets you 12% on fuel.

It's basically a better version of amex PT and complements anyone that has Atlas since you won't have acceptance issues and you can easily book flights or hotels.

Yes the fees is high , the tony n guy , interflora etc are just gimmicks , add on card costs 3k and no BOGO nor does it work for visa infinity . These are definitely cons and i 100% agree. But every card has pros and cons.

If you travel , this card works wonders. If you don't , it sucks. People seriously need to stop with the blind hate wagon. I understand that on reddit, but here , from pros , it's a let down to see that.
How tony & guy voucher is gimmick? I have used the 3K voucher, took service of 3600 & paid 600 only, Got free visa via Altys. Have redeemed easemytrip hotel voucher, klook vouchers, 2 airport transfer in bangalore is easily worth 5K, Also got 10K tata cliq vouchers, 12% on shell fuel,

It's a gimmick cause it's only to fixed cities. Full South India is exempt. Id understand if tony n guy doesn't service those cities. But this looks like an extremely limited coverage from times side. Already quorum club and a lot of events are restricted , but that's understandable since th club is only at gurgaon. But this just feels like a gimmick . I literally have a tony n guy 2 mins from my home and they outrightly denied since it's not covered.

Rest of the things even i have used. I never said those are gimmicks. I'm one of the people who actually supports those. I myself have used the airport transfer vouchers for my recent kochi trip too.

I have the ICICI Plastic Emeralde Card since two years, and use it for spends after reaching the 7.5 Lakh milestone on the Axis Atlas card, hoping that it will be upgraded to the ICICI EPM, because I am able to reach the 10 Lakh fee waiver criteria on it quite easily.

Yes, I don't know why they excluded entire south India, but for the outlets mentioned in north, it is seamless process otherwise.

EPM mostly depends on your per month salary (> 3L per month, have also heard 2.5L) or TRV, and after that on RM (RM must fight to get it) - spends AFIK don't have anything to do with it (got it when my spends were ~ 1L for the entire year)

If you have salary > 3LPM, just contact your RM, they should be able to provide
If you have salary < 3L, you can try via your company's corporate RM if you have a home loan with ICICI/high ITR - corporate RM generally is a lot better esp if your company is large

I completely agree with the statement that its not for everyone and its a niche usecase. My own review on reddit agreed with this whole heartedly.

My only problem is blanket statements with 0 essence or any explanation that simply says the card sucks or you wont get back the fees. Id expect that level of in-dept analysis from reddit, not from high ranking members in the community.
I think most of the hate would not be there is the fees was 15k+ GST instead of 20k. That's a psychological factor at play because of high fees.

Read the thread about the WORST cards of 2024 by Technofino founder himself.
Read ALL the opinions about Times Black.

Thread 'Best Credit Cards 2025 and Worst Credit Cards of 2024 – Public Opinion' https://technofino.in/community/thr...-credit-cards-of-2024-–-public-opinion.35963/

Then compare Times Black with EPM, which is easily one of the Top 3 cards in India.
Same ICICI Bank, but such a HUGE difference!

We all love credit cards, no one has blind hate, just giving you good advice.

Maybe go and re read the same threads yourself ? That worst card thread was before ishop was introduced making times black and actually good card now in the right hands .

Also EPM is for folks with 2.5L.+ salary , times can be taken by anyone.

Who in the right mind compared times with EPM ? That was talked about originally when that thread was created . After ishop got introduced, it's obvious times black is placed at Atlas range and it is a better plat travel. Please be updated with devaluatons and revaluations.

You are just proving my point . This sounds like something id see on reddit where folks see one thing and stick to it instead of staying updated . That's called blind hate. This is nowhere a good advice.

I don't know. I'm being told that I look at things emotionally when I say it's blind hate while people are calling a card shit cause of psychological aspects.

Times black is a good card only for those who cannot get HSBC Premier, HSBC Travel One, EPM, Infinia, or don't have Atlas.

For people who asked whether or not they should renew TB or even go ahead with it for the want of a premium card, I suggest the following (all with due respect to our dear Times Black Super Premium card):

1. Look at your expenses and spending pattern. If you think, you will not only be able to recover the fees but also well utilise its joining/milestone benefits without much of a hassle, go for it.
Even if I hadn’t had Infinia/EPM, I’d probably never go for it as it doesn’t offer much value for my sort of spending pattern and lifestyle.

2. For a good alternative, study IDFC Mayura - a solid value for money METAL card (I don’t hold one as disclaimer, just a genuine suggestion)
It offers solid 60 reward points / ₹150 (on hotels), 40 reward points / ₹150 (on flights) which is about 30% and 20% valueback. 0 forex markup with >3% base rewards. 12k points as joining benefits equal to 6k Rs. Moreover, it also gives points on Rent, Government, Wallet Load and Education (I believe, no other cards offers rewards on some of these categories)

Point is, even if you don’t hold Infinia/EPM sort of cards you still have some great products around. Just that one needs to be aware of these products and know well what exactly s/he is looking for from the card(s).

This is a new change actually. They were earlier offering 4k and 2k cashback for joining fees, whcih was why both ashva and mayura dint get enough good coverage. 12k points is a solid offer for someone taking the card now. Sadly they still dont have any renewal benefit other than fee waiver.

Have the mayura myself and yes its a solid card for first year. Second year, if you dont hit atleast 8L spends, the fees is too high sadly since 8L gets you half the fee as points.

Card also has 500 BOGO on district twice, CFAR and RSA. And it also works for Jewellery payments.

It's fee is around 6K and even without any renewal benefits it's worth it. This card ticks all the boxes....whether it's accelerated rewards on travel like HSBC Premier, or international expenses 0 forex markup and >3% rewards... better than Infinia/EPM in terms on valueback on international spends, BOGO and insanely who else gives you rewards on Govt., Jewelry spends and wallet loads....no super premium card would. Its fee is similar to Atlas and much lower than 24K of TB where base reward rate is so mediocre, intl. txs gives you a +ive valueback but not decent enough.
With Mayura, you get rewards on pretty much everything and that itself makes up for the fee and if you travel a couple of times or more in a year it delivers a solid value.
Btw, Mayura is just an example, all I'm saying is that you have better cards in the market that suits your lifestyle.

Look, i agree there are options. No one is claiming Times is the best. I even said its like a better Plat travel and complements atlas.

For Mayura, i still say its not worth it for 2nd year.

2. For a good alternative, study IDFC Mayura - a solid value for money METAL card (I don’t hold one as disclaimer, just a genuine suggestion)
It offers solid 60 reward points / ₹150 (on hotels), 40 reward points / ₹150 (on flights) which is about 30% and 20% valueback
  • Its not actually 30% & 20%. Its actually 20% for Hotels and 13% for flights since 1RP = 0.5 Rs when redeemed for travel.
    • So for 20k spends on hotel ( need this to hit the multiplier for extra 10 points) , you get (50+10) points per 150, making it 8000 RP which is worth 4k since 1 Rp =0.5 Rs for travel. So 4k for 20k spends make it 20% valueback . Same for flights it becomes 5333 RP making it 2666 rs.

Moreover, it also gives points on Rent, Government, Wallet Load and Education (I believe, no other cards offers rewards on some of these categories)

insanely who else gives you rewards on Govt., Jewelry spends and wallet loads....no super premium card would
  1. Mayura gives 3X on rent, government, wallet load, and education and 1X on Insurance as well as utilties. These dont come under the 20k milestone and wont get extra points
    1. rent, government, wallet load, and education - 20k spends will earn 3 RP per 150 making it 200 rs on 20k spends which is 1% valueback .
    2. Insurance and utilties - 20k spends will earn 1 RP per 150 making it 66 rs on 20k spends which is 0.3% valueback
  2. Times black gives 2% base reward rate where 1 Rp = 1Rs on Utilities, Insurance, Education, Government Services , Jewellery as well as hospital spends.
    1. You can just buy 12k AGV for 8% valueback for usual utility spends too.
    2. Doesnt work for wallet load and rent sadly
  3. Amex PT also gives rewards via milestone. So Mayura definitely has competition that gives better flat value.
  4. Further, The Lounge access is behind a spend based target which is definitely achievable , agreed. But it doesnt feel premium. Atleast its not like Yes Marquee that put a 1L spend based lounge access for a quarter.

The 12k joining bonus is amazing, the +3% forex is insanely good value, BOGO is cherry on top. But id still say this card is amazing for first year and not so great for 2nd year.

BTW, similar to Yes Marquee , this card also has a 70% redemption cap while times has a 95% redemption cap. But atleast Marquee gives equal RP in points for renewal. Again, only for comparison since its a Times thread.

This is the reason why Mayura dint get enough coverage and still can't complete with the best. It's also why Travel 1, atlas , PT and Times are constantly in the discussion and mayura isn't. Marquee was a great card which got destroyed due to the devaluations. Mayura is a card that could be more but isn't.
