ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card Launched - Full Details & Review

ICICI Bank is soon launching its top-tier super-premium credit card: the ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card.
Expected launch time: Mid December 2024

Fees:
  • Joining Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
  • Annual Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
Interestingly, ICICI mentions a "1st-year fee" of Rs. 20,000 + GST, similar to the Amex Centurion card's structure. It looks like the bank will charge both the joining fee and 1st-year fee at issuance, with the annual fee billed at the end of the card’s anniversary year.

However, ICICI is known for some tricky wording around card fees and waiver conditions in their MITC. For instance, I was charged an annual fee on my Emeralde Credit Card a few years back, and my consumer court case on this is still pending. (More details on that here: https://www.technofino.in/community...d-even-after-meeting-reversal-criteria.11061/)

Related Update (20th Dec, 2024):
ICICI Bank updated their MITC once again on 16th December 2024. As per the latest MITC, the first-year fee (Rs. 20,000 + GST) for the Times Black Credit Card has been removed. Customers now only need to pay Rs. 20,000 + GST at the time of joining.

This new ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card will reportedly have a sleek design, exclusive to a select group of customers. According to some sources, it’s expected to offer lifestyle perks unavailable on any other credit card in India so far.

Reward Rate Analysis:

My Opinion:
When ICICI Bank first announced the Times Black Credit Card, it was positioned as a competitor to premium cards like the Axis Primus and even the Amex Centurion. According to some ICICI Bank and Times Internet Group officials, this card was intended to challenge the dominance of the Amex Centurion in its category in India.

However, after reviewing the benefits, it is clear that this card falls short. While it does offer a few exclusive perks, such as airport transfers via helicopter, this benefit is limited to Bengaluru, making it impractical for most users. Similarly, the doorstep visa service is restricted to select locations, which diminishes its overall appeal.

As consumers, we must evaluate the real-world usability of a product's benefits. Most of the features offered by this card are inaccessible to people living outside metropolitan cities.

In terms of rewards, the card is average, offering just 2% rewards with a cap of 5,000 reward points per month on categories like utility, insurance, education, and government payments—this is a major drawback. Additionally, it does not provide rewards on fuel or rent payments, and the 1% fee on rent transactions (with only the first rent payment of the month being fee-free) further reduces its value.

But... ICICI Bank iShop Portal makes all the difference. Using this card, you can earn up to 24% rewards on iShop for flight & hotel bookings and gift voucher purchases, which significantly enhances this card’s value.

When compared to the Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card, which is available at a far lower price point, the Times Black Credit Card is noticeably inferior. It is unclear why ICICI Bank launched a product like the Times Black and placed it above Emeralde Private Metal in its lineup.

The card’s markup fee is another downside—at 1.49% + GST, it is higher than other cards in the same category, making it less competitive for international transactions.
Premium cardholders often expect a comprehensive concierge service, but ICICI Bank has imposed limits on the number of concierge services one can avail.

Despite being marketed as one of the most exclusive credit cards in India, the reality is far different. Almost everyone who already has a credit card with ICICI Bank seems to be getting approved for this card on a shared limit basis, which diminishes its exclusivity.

Overall, the Times Black Credit Card fails to deliver on the hype created by ICICI Bank and the Times Internet Group. It lacks exclusivity and practical benefits, which are expected from a premium credit card.
If you are purely looking at iShop portal spends, then you can earn significant value back using this credit card. Otherwise, this card is not at all lucrative.
You must keep in mind that you can only book flights, hotels, and buy some gift vouchers from iShop, so evaluate how much you'll spend on that before deciding whether this card makes sense for you or not.
And one major downside of ICICI Bank Credit Cards is that they don't offer airline miles transfer partners. With a few airline miles transfer partners, this card would look much better.

It's fee is around 6K and even without any renewal benefits it's worth it. This card ticks all the boxes....whether it's accelerated rewards on travel like HSBC Premier, or international expenses 0 forex markup and >3% rewards... better than Infinia/EPM in terms on valueback on international spends, BOGO and insanely who else gives you rewards on Govt., Jewelry spends and wallet loads....no super premium card would. Its fee is similar to Atlas and much lower than 24K of TB where base reward rate is so mediocre, intl. txs gives you a +ive valueback but not decent enough.
With Mayura, you get rewards on pretty much everything and that itself makes up for the fee and if you travel a couple of times or more in a year it delivers a solid value.
Btw, Mayura is just an example, all I'm saying is that you have better cards in the market that suits your lifestyle.
Agree. But people (ccgeeks maybe) care more for points because of redemption options and transfer partners. I may be wrong, but this is one more view point.
On that front, HDFC points, Edge rewards and edge miles, Amex MR points etc are the top point currencies in the market.
Because they have good redemption options and transfer partners.
To that, ICICI points are not so loved for, becuase as of now Air India is the only trnasfer partner, and there is only redemption option via ishop.

More to that, the much popular BOB Eterna does not have any thing. We just need to redeem points as statement credit. Basically it is a cashback card.

In short what I am saying is - how popular is the redemption option and transfer partner, and how strong the tech platform is - plays a big role in card's popularity. IDFC First's tech is very good. Points do not expire. And there is good transparency and accountability. App is super smooth etc. But their point system is not so popular.
Same for other smaller banks like Yes, RBL, Kotak, Indusind, etc. A newbie doesn't even get to know about their point system, reward multiplier site, redemption options, transfer partners, ratios and values etc. Many people doesnt even know if it exists and how to make the best use of it.

Consider or ICICI HSBC for that matter - not transparent, we don't get txn wise points in the statement, HSBC app is so lagging and slow etc. But just the brand name and marketing matters.

What I am trying to say is - there is no enough content online in forums or youtube for all reward point systems, except the few big popular ones. So eventhough there are better cards in the market that suits your lifestyle and much rewarding, people need to know those things exists.
(In other side, since there are not many people interested in the lesser popular ones, banks also don't give importance to improve the product or push their sales. They just remain mediocre in terms of user experiece. While the biggies, even though having not so good user exp, flourishes because of the push from content creators).

For people who asked whether or not they should renew TB or even go ahead with it for the want of a premium card, I suggest the following (all with due respect to our dear Times Black Super Premium card):

1. Look at your expenses and spending pattern. If you think, you will not only be able to recover the fees but also well utilise its joining/milestone benefits without much of a hassle, go for it.
Even if I hadn’t had Infinia/EPM, I’d probably never go for it as it doesn’t offer much value for my sort of spending pattern and lifestyle.

2. For a good alternative, study IDFC Mayura - a solid value for money METAL card (I don’t hold one as disclaimer, just a genuine suggestion)
It offers solid 60 reward points / ₹150 (on hotels), 40 reward points / ₹150 (on flights) which is about 30% and 20% valueback. 0 forex markup with >3% base rewards. 12k points as joining benefits equal to 6k Rs. Moreover, it also gives points on Rent, Government, Wallet Load and Education (I believe, no other cards offers rewards on some of these categories)

Point is, even if you don’t hold Infinia/EPM sort of cards you still have some great products around. Just that one needs to be aware of these products and know well what exactly s/he is looking for from the card(s).
IDFC Mayura
The Catch: You must spend over ₹20,000 in a month to unlock the decent reward rate. If you spend ₹15,000/month, your return is a meager 1.66%, (if reward points are used for flights) or else 0.83%.

Key Benefits (Why you would get this card)
A. Zero Forex Markup (Best Feature)
Most cards charge 2.36% or 4.13% on international spends. The Mayura charges 0%., but users report 0.59% forex markup
If you travel abroad or shop on international websites frequently, this alone can save you more than the annual fee.

B. Movie Offer (Excellent)
Offer: Buy 1 Get 1 Free on BookMyShow.
Cap: Up to ₹500 off on the second ticket.
Frequency: Twice a month.
Potential Savings: ₹12,000/year if fully utilized.

C. Airport & Railway Lounge Access
International: 4 per quarter (16/year) – No spend condition.
Domestic: 4 per quarter – Condition: Must spend ₹20,000 in the previous month to unlock.
Railway Lounges: 4 per quarter (Dreamfolks enabled lounges).

D. Golf (Strictly Conditional)
You get up to 40 rounds/lessons a year, BUT they are unlocked based on monthly spend.
Spend ₹20,000 Unlock 1 Lesson/Round.
Spend ₹40,000 Unlock 2nd Lesson/Round.

Verdict: Is it worth it?
✅ Get it if:
You are a Frequent Traveler: The 0% Forex + 3.33% return on travel bookings is a powerful combo.
You Watch Movies Often: The ₹500 BOGO offer is one of the highest in the market (better than many premium cards which cap at ₹250-₹400).
You Spend ₹30k+ Monthly: You need to consistently cross the ₹20k threshold to make the rewards meaningful.

❌ Avoid it if:
You want a "Simple" Card: The staggered welcome benefit and spend-based lounge access are annoying to track.
You are a Low Spender: Below ₹20,000/month, the reward rate is poor (0.8%).
You want Cash Cashback: The redemption rate for cash/statement credit is terrible (0.25 INR). You are forced to use the IDFC Travel portal to get value.

Personally have used the times black card and love it, got the 23k fees in the 10k vouchers from klook tata cliq & ease my trip(30k) that's already over the joining fees. personally earned over 1,50,000 points which I couldn't have done without the card but now since I got the premier using this as my backup for the next year as I have the renewal waiver and use it for GV or when I hit the limit on premier. So for me it made really good sense and has been a good card. if you have travel expense and don't have the EPM, Infinia and premier than this does make sense. still have to use my Ayatana resort stay worth 20k and my airport transfers. even the puma voucher was a free 5k additional so idk this card has a lot to offer for the 23k it asks.

If you do not have the first-tier cards such as INFINIA or EPM, this card should be a straightforward choice.

For me personally, as I do not possess those cards, it serves as a suitable alternative.

I use this card in conjunction with DCBM and BIZ BLACK, and it provides significant benefits. I recently received Puma vouchers and am considering renewing this card in February-March.

Just curious - If you have DCBM & BizBlack, why do you even need TB or likes. I know DCB may have acceptability issue but what you have it a damn good combo, top it up with Atlas, Mayura, Travel One etc. if you want visa/MC and all set. But again it's me.

Curious to know your use cases &, if ok, expenses on these cards so have a better pic.

I also have Mayura.

Times Black Uses—whether through the Ishop Portal for voucher purchases—it seems to offer a better reward than DCBM-Smart Buy. Plus, it’s available on Visa, which makes it easier to accept where DINERS aren't accepted.

So TB majorly for vouchers. Which one is your primary DCBM or TB?

For vouchers, I use TB. Like I said earlier, it gives a better reward in terms of vouchers than SmartBuy-DCBM. The use of DCBM is now mainly restricted to whether I don't use vouchers and offline purchases, and SmartBuy linked shopping like on Myntra, and Pharmeasy (my medicine cost mostly is more than 5K, so 33.33% really eases that cost pain 😄) since it gives 3.33% (plus a 2.5% bonus on completion of 4 lakhs).
Use of Biz Black is obvious - taxes plus insurance premium payments.

What vouchers and discounts on Times Black ?

Correct !
only if you don't have the EPM, Infinia and Premier, then only Times Black makes sense

As it almost 1 year since launch of Times black, for those who are going to renew it. Can you please share renewal benefits which is been offered?
No renewal benefits offered by ICICI

Most likely will renew it this year, can get renewal fee back from gov payment/milestones (until I get Bizblack)
