I’m currently in Indonesia, on 31/10/2023 I used my Axis Bank Burgundy Debit card to withdraw cash from a nearby ATM.

Unfortunately, I lost my debit card there and I did not realise, this until I started receiving messages for transactions through my debit card.

Once I saw these messages, I tried to block my card, but the Axis Bank app was having technical issues.
I tried calling Burgundy support, it didn’t connect.
I also tried blocking my card via SMS that also didn’t work.
I finally was able to get it blocked by calling emergency number but until then 3 more transactions happened.

If not for the technical issues I would’ve been able to save the last 3 transactions.

As here, the POS machines don’t require password, they were doing back to back small transactions amounting to Rs. 57273 (approx 12,000,000 IDR).

I also filed a report with the Indonesian police.
I sent all of this with screenshots to my RM and she opened a service request, but the idiotic nodal team denied it saying that they were POS transactions (requires PIN).
I have reverted them explaining that the POS machines here don't require PIN.
Anything else that I should do to get this resolved?

Debit cards will come with some fraud protection so you will be protected. They will run an investigation and if all things check out, you will be compensated for your loss. I find that cards are the most convenient and cheapest way to transact abroad, but I don't like to advocate the same because of such instances and rather suggest most people carry currency in cash. This is where I feel the RBI has done so much in terms of protection in India. Many people have been subject to card skimming and have lost a lot of money like this. Bali is especially known for card skimmers. To mitigate these risks, I only add money I want to withdraw into my account right before withdrawing it using the international ATM. My suggestion is to only activate international ATM transactions and disable other international payment options for your DC. Use your CC for international POS and online transactions.

Scary . POS dont need PIN or you had contactless enabled??

Never been to Indonesia but I can say that any contact less transaction above 5,000 INR will get rejected. That's the maximum per transaction limit for contact less payments.

I don't know about whether pin is necessary in Indonesia, so no comments on that.

Yeh to risky mamla hai
Can you give some example of cards and merchant
Most US merchants(Walmart,BestBuy, Amazon US) don't ask for OTPs. Just your card details and payment will go through. Many other international websites will complete the transactions without OTPs.

When I visited last, the pin was required everywhere. Maybe the OP was subject to card skimming.

Popular sites among tourists such as booking.com doesn't require OTP

Got the following news article, which says, Indonesia moved to PIN only since 2020.

"The change is in accordance with the mandate from Bank Indonesia (BI) whereby authentication via signatures will no longer be accepted.

There will be no issues with foreign cards that have four- and five-digit PINs. Cards that have been issued by banks outside Indonesia will still be required to use a PIN and signing to authorise a transaction will no longer be an option."

I suspect that OP is a victim of PIN theft from ATM through false keypads/hidden camera.
So, transaction has indeed been done using card and stolen PIN.

You know, I forgot my card in the ATM machine in an Indomaret, and I just saw a mail from Axis indicating that the transactions were done on a POS machine in an Indomaret.

Can these be contactless transactions? Because my contactless daily limit was set to 60,000 and the transactions stopped happening after 58000.

And if it indeed is card skimming, can anything be done?

as far as I know contactless transactions have per transaction maximum value of 5k.
most probably they got to know your pin while you typed it, using skimming device.

I would suggest you to continue esclating the matter with axis and also if possible mail to indomaret and let them know about the ordeal. As indomaret is a large chain, you can raise voice and also tweet to indomaret.

Still PIN is required in transactions above ₹5000 even with contactless.

Most probably they know your PIN via hidden camera or a person looking over shoulder.

If card is skimmed then just block it, and no further problems

No this is definitely POS. They stole your pin using a retrofitted keypad or hidden camera. If there was a card skimmer, they wouldn't need your card anyways. Next time withdraw only from ATMs inside banks or right outside banks.

also I have learnt a big lesson from this thread. In my upcoming intl trip, I'll switchoff contactless txns before I leave India.

Indomaret or any other convenience store won't do jack. See how many instances are there for 7-11 in the US.

Totally agree with you.

Contactless won't hurt.
If they know your PIN that would hurt.
