ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card Launched - Full Details & Review

ICICI Bank is soon launching its top-tier super-premium credit card: the ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card.
Expected launch time: Mid December 2024

Fees:
  • Joining Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
  • Annual Fee: Rs. 20,000 + GST
Interestingly, ICICI mentions a "1st-year fee" of Rs. 20,000 + GST, similar to the Amex Centurion card's structure. It looks like the bank will charge both the joining fee and 1st-year fee at issuance, with the annual fee billed at the end of the card’s anniversary year.

However, ICICI is known for some tricky wording around card fees and waiver conditions in their MITC. For instance, I was charged an annual fee on my Emeralde Credit Card a few years back, and my consumer court case on this is still pending. (More details on that here: https://www.technofino.in/community...d-even-after-meeting-reversal-criteria.11061/)

Related Update (20th Dec, 2024):
ICICI Bank updated their MITC once again on 16th December 2024. As per the latest MITC, the first-year fee (Rs. 20,000 + GST) for the Times Black Credit Card has been removed. Customers now only need to pay Rs. 20,000 + GST at the time of joining.

This new ICICI Bank Times Black Credit Card will reportedly have a sleek design, exclusive to a select group of customers. According to some sources, it’s expected to offer lifestyle perks unavailable on any other credit card in India so far.

My Opinion:
When ICICI Bank first announced the Times Black Credit Card, it was positioned as a competitor to premium cards like the Axis Primus and even the Amex Centurion. According to some ICICI Bank and Times Internet Group officials, this card was intended to challenge the dominance of the Amex Centurion in its category in India.

However, after reviewing the benefits, it is clear that this card falls short. While it does offer a few exclusive perks, such as airport transfers via helicopter, this benefit is limited to Bengaluru, making it impractical for most users. Similarly, the doorstep visa service is restricted to select locations, which diminishes its overall appeal.

As consumers, we must evaluate the real-world usability of a product's benefits. Most of the features offered by this card are inaccessible to people living outside metropolitan cities.

In terms of rewards, the card is average, offering just 2% rewards with a cap of 5,000 reward points per month on categories like utility, insurance, education, and government payments—this is a major drawback. Additionally, it does not provide rewards on fuel or rent payments, and the 1% fee on rent transactions (with only the first rent payment of the month being fee-free) further reduces its value.

But... ICICI Bank iShop Portal makes all the difference. Using this card, you can earn up to 24% rewards on iShop for flight & hotel bookings and gift voucher purchases, which significantly enhances this card’s value.

When compared to the Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card, which is available at a far lower price point, the Times Black Credit Card is noticeably inferior. It is unclear why ICICI Bank launched a product like the Times Black and placed it above Emeralde Private Metal in its lineup.

The card’s markup fee is another downside—at 1.49% + GST, it is higher than other cards in the same category, making it less competitive for international transactions.
Premium cardholders often expect a comprehensive concierge service, but ICICI Bank has imposed limits on the number of concierge services one can avail.

Despite being marketed as one of the most exclusive credit cards in India, the reality is far different. Almost everyone who already has a credit card with ICICI Bank seems to be getting approved for this card on a shared limit basis, which diminishes its exclusivity.

Overall, the Times Black Credit Card fails to deliver on the hype created by ICICI Bank and the Times Internet Group. It lacks exclusivity and practical benefits, which are expected from a premium credit card.
If you are purely looking at iShop portal spends, then you can earn significant value back using this credit card. Otherwise, this card is not at all lucrative.
You must keep in mind that you can only book flights, hotels, and buy some gift vouchers from iShop, so evaluate how much you'll spend on that before deciding whether this card makes sense for you or not.
And one major downside of ICICI Bank Credit Cards is that they don't offer airline miles transfer partners. With a few airline miles transfer partners, this card would look much better.

This was expected from the beginning since Private Banking doesn't offer any add-on features for the Times Black account. However, ICICI first upgraded my account and then downgraded it after about two months, which makes no sense. If they didn’t intend to keep the account upgraded, why did they upgrade it in the first place, even if only for a short period?

In my case, my account was previously upgraded to Wealth Banking from the backend, and now they have directly downgraded it to a six-month-old Privilege Banking account. Due to this upgrade, my debit card has also changed, and it might incur charges starting next year. Additionally, I have lost my previous relationship manager because of this situation.

My complaint is still open, so let’s see what happens. I’m even considering escalating this matter to the RBI Ombudsman because what ICICI Bank is doing doesn’t seem right or legal to me.
Hope people realize that how ICICI tried operating with EPM & TB isn't a sustainable model. Upgrading to TB holders' account to private didn't make any sense in the first place because everyone was approved for TB even those who had no or basic relationship with ICICI. One can't achieve private banking status just like that. While there's no exclusivity with TB, ICICI made TB holders feel exclusive with that gimmick for some time only to later revert their status. Same happened with iShop. I feel - this is not ethical on bank's part but at the same time our friends also need to understand what could be a sustainable model. With EPM YES as it may remain an exclusive card at par with Infinia so they can afford to offer exclusive benefits but not to a million cardholders with majority having basic relationship with the bank. Another thing, bank has never officially announced iShop benefits or launch over a formal communication, some people say it's still a beta version. So expect things to continue to evolve.

I agreed with you!

I would still rank TB >> DCMB
because
1. TB was easy to get. HDFC does not approve metal cards easily.
2 milestones on TB are much better.
3 no joining benefits in DCMB
4 lounge access in TB much better (VIP lounges)
5 offline acceptability of DCMB bad
6 special event access on TB

One size doesn’t fit all. You should choose a card that works for you best.
I have neither of these cards but I’d anytime go with DCBM if I have an option to choose from these 2.
DCBM has acceptability issues which is its big downside.
DCBM too has milestone benefits, one can earn 10000 points/Qtr on spending 4L that gives you 40K points which you have the discretion to use your way. 2X on weekend dining. Excellent lounge network including arrival lounges.
Its base reward 3.3% is at par with Infinia and 33% reward on certain categories. GVP is another great benefit for international transactions that gets you up +1.97% value back.

Moreover, Fee is 10k+Gst which is what ppl like me can afford 🙂 and that’s about 11800 Rs saving on the fee itself when compared to TB. Add to that max possible milestone benefits on DCBM of 40k.
Just carry a 0 forex markup card like Scapia on visa/mc platform alongside DCBM, DCBM makes a great choice.

It’s all about what one is looking for. May it TB fits well your needs, just that you need to stay strong with ICICI as situation may keep evolving given it’s issued left, right and centre. 🙂

Yes, I have already claimed the welcome benefits of the Times Black card. I have also booked two events. However, I haven’t been able to achieve the spend-based milestone yet. So far, I have spent only around ₹1 lakh, mostly on gift card purchases via Speed iShop.
You've used emt voucher? Is it for specific hotels or any hotels? Any minimum amount required or any other condition?

Most of the transitions are reflecting, with only a few missing—especially the larger transactions, which I noticed today. Also, I am unable to access the iShop platform today; it keeps showing errors and won't open at all. According to customer care, this card was launched recently, which is why some issues are occurring. They assured me that these problems will be resolved soon. Let's see what happens next.
90k limit released yesterday ig from my TB CC, that was unsettled Ishop txns.

See I'll tell you about my experience.

I got TB easily because ICICI gave it on shared limit. I liked that, I regret not using it for the fullest but yes I did use 1.5L on iShop so I'll mostly recover some part of the fees and will recover leftover too as per my calculations. I'm nowhere near the eligibility criteria on paper but luckily got it based on shared limit.

I've not compared the benefits of TB and DCBM, DCBM might be a better card but eligibility and approval also matters...

Also as you discussed about evolving situation so it's not just ICICI right? Other banks too practice same things maybe not frequently but they do...

I'm not taking sides or praising any bank or card just giving out my opinion on this. And as for the HDFC DCBM I am not eligible for Regalia as per the eligibility on paper so DCBM is far away for me.

So far evolving situation is concerned I meant this ishop thing isn’t stabilised or finalised yet, it’s in beta, buddy. There’s no formal communication from ICICI to the card holders and so it’s all open to whatever changes. Moreover, TB being a new product, changes could be more frequent than other cards that have been around for sometime. That’s evolving. It doesn’t mean that other cards wouldn’t get devalued or revalued, banks like any other org will continue to review their business strategies.

HDFC did not approve me DCBM or infinia even with itr twice the current requirement because i had regalia which i was not using
They were very strict about monthly net salary criteria which i was not meeting.
Lot of collegue of mine went for infinia in exchange of shitty plans
So instead of taking shitty plans from HDFC TB is still better for some people
