Need help: Bank account for temporary UPI usage

Hi All,

Scenario:
My cousin is travelling to India for a month. He doesn't have an India number and will take a new SIM for stay in India.
During this period, we want to open/link a savings account to this new number so that he can pay using UPI easily. The number will not be used further once he goes back.
Hence, we are looking for a temporary account opened on that number (without much hassles), that can be closed/left after one month. Alternatively, I can open an account, change Regd Mob number of that account to new/temporary one and change it back to mine once he goes back.

Earlier, I used to change number on my secondary Paytm account, but now that Paytm bank is barred by RBI, this wont work. I tried changing number for Jio Payment bank, but I think it is not allowed. I'm fine opening one on my name/aadhar and letting him use it....if its easy to change the mobile number and can open account easily on non-aadhar number.
Usage will be decent, so can open one with some 20-30K Initial funding as well.

Any suggestions to fulfil my specific requirement easily?

Possibilities:
1. Open any payment bank account - digital and where easy to open/modify details.
2. Opening a zero balance account on my name and get the number changed (or directly open using the new number). - Which one?
3. Change the number on any of my traditional accounts which I'm not using and change it back again by going to branch.

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS - Prefering not to open a full fleged bank account or change number on full fleged account as "it is hassle/pain getting it changed", plus they may also ask for branch visits which is to be avoided. Plus the cheque/ATM thing takes 7-8 days to come and account gets fully activated only after that.

I have Equitas and SBM accounts linked with their Niyo debit cards.
Anybody having experience of changing RMNs on these accounts/Niyo?

Any new online account will require mobile number linked with Aadhaar. So you cannot open account online on alternate number. Per your need you can change mobile number to your existing account. The mobile number change can be done via ATM machine so no hastle on that. So check via ATM and change it to alternate number. If would take 2 working days to get updated. If it allows via ATM then change it, use it for 1 month and change again via ATM.

Why you want a account for this?

Use UPI Circle. Do full delegation of total (15k) limit.

Expensive things can be purchased using his own /your cards or you can pay on his behalf if UPI is required to buy expensive thing, simple.

Or change RGM in your account via Online/ offline; ATM/Branch/Home banking. Why to open a fresh/new account just for a month?

Thanks @Aniket.... Is UPI Circle operational? I came across the announcement, but dint use it yet. Any prefered platform - GPay or any other?

And agree to you point - I was thinking that his transactions can be done on a separate account (hence, was thinking on small payment bank type accounts)..... but yeah, it's a hassle and of not much use, agree!

Yes, it's operational, Use BHIM, see if you have received an update (latest revamped version).

Even if you didn't receive any update, go with BHIM.

P.S: Lemme know if you face any issue.
You can run test txn...

Another quick way is to create wallet on any popular app and enable upi on wallet. You can load money into upi enabled wallet and withdraw as well. And loading and withdraw wallet on upi is free of charge for full kyc wallets.

Thanks for the input @JSK111 - Did you mean full KYC wallet like mobikwik? Any other example?

Yes Mobikwik and its call Pocket UPI on mobikwik. Others are Phonepe wallet upi, Amaon Pay Wallet UPI, etc. Don's use HDFC Payzapp wallet coz it can only be used for merchant payment and withdraw to bank has charges. Cred wallet don't have upi yet. New Paytm wallet, I have not used so no knowledge.
