Query Regarding SBI Debit Card Annual Charges

Dear Members,

I have a question regarding SBI Bank's Debit Cards, particularly those categorized as First Year Free (FYF). If I were to close a debit card after using it for 11 months and subsequently apply for a new one, repeating this process annually, would the bank deduct any annual charges from my account? :hehe:

I've SBI Global debit card having expiry month as July but last year I was charged AMC on 17th Feb 2024 and an year before that AMC was charged on exact same date only i.e. 17th Feb 2023.

I'm not willing to continue with physical debit card from SBI as I already have a virtual DC issued, so, I should cancel the DC now to avoid being charged fee for another year, right?

Yes, you should then.

Nope, any new card that you get with FYF conditions will be free for the first year.

But can the bank blacklist you and never give you another card?
Possibly if you exploit too much.

I activated virtual debit card on all family accounts but forgot (missed) to close one physical debit card. AMC Rs 236 was charged today for that one. 🙁
Don't close physical dc if you are using the account as primary account for all purposes. For example, last time I couldn't set emi mandate using VDC. No problem as such in physical. Just keep that in mind.

In my view, VDC is an excellent option to have but cannot be a replacement to physical DC.

Anyone else wondering this here is the answer.

When you permanently block a card it remains associated with your account. And there is a limit of how many cards an account can have. it counts both active and inactive cards. I don't clearly remember the limit. I think it is 3.

So, after blocking 3 cards you wouldn't be able to request new card online. You have to visit a branch and request them to remove the cards from your account. And believe me this will be a pain in the ass. I had to visit 3 times and answer a lot of question to get all those cards removed from my account.

Bhai if you had called the customer care, they would've done it for you :/

I myself has changed the status from "BLOCK" to "CLOSED" with the help of customer care.
