Address change in NRO account by foreign citizen with no Indian address proof

A foreign citizen (OCI holder) wants to change its foreign address in PSU Bank account it holds in India to Indian address where their Indian relatives stay. When they approached the bank they are asking for document proof with Indian address but they don't have any. Is there any was that we can update the address in account basis the relatives Indian address

Go to Branch Manager desk, say that RBI encouraged the bank's to update the communication address that was self declared by customer.

Did you confirm if they accept rental agreement? If not, please do confirm.

I think rental agreement should work. Prepare a rental agreement and showcase to bank.

No rent agreement prepared. Let's see what I can do about it.

I tried to reason out logically but they didn't budge. Will try to find the RBI circular and reason it with them that way

Depends on the person you are talking to. Also most banking personnel are not even aware of such things.

One would thing they would know, but its sad state of affairs. Do note that many don't even care even if you furnish the guideline, so it usually becomes a long route of complaining.



I could find only below one as close to your scenario where point (b) could be your case. Not sure of any revisions of this guideline.

I spoke even with the branch manager and he even contacted their backend but they told you need to provide some government proof or electricity bill

This is expected and would be a fight.
As I mentioned its a sad state of affair with banking personnel (which includes BM). They don't even know about offerings of their own bank let alone something which they don't encounter daily.

But I am pretty sure about rental agreement being a valid document.

They need to update that Indian address in their OCI , and then should not be a problem at all.

That is the most difficult thing, for any changes in OCI, they have to travel far to Indian embassy and for the matter of bank account its ok but changing the address on OCI I am not sure they will be comfortable. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.

Address in OCI can be changed here in India as well at any FRRO, they are very lenient in India.

I am telling this from my experience since my Wife is an OCI holder and I updated her OCI address to my Indian address- Only my Aadhaar was required.

This was at FRRO Delhi, fee = Rs. 1500/-, time taken 10 days ( start to finish)
