Hi TF team,

detailing my experience below

I got a call from Priyanka Sharma (don't know if it's real name) (919220422307) claiming to be part of icici bank credit card team. and asked me about my recent card which i had applied. since i had actually applied for one i didn't doubt her. she was asking genuine questions like was there any issue with delivery or have i faced any issues so far. so far good.

then when i was about to end the call she said on further checking my profile since i applied for the card during some offer period i have some points worth 6k inactive and said she was going to help me activate them. since somehere i saw rubyx card had 6500 worth benfits i belived her.

she asked me to visit my imobile app and go to card section and asked me to enable all tx limits ATM withdrawal, POS, tap to pay and online and set to max (should have set alarm bells here)....... then she asked if my points were visible. when i said no she said since i'm a new customer (which i am not already have amazon card) i have to fill a form.

she then asked me to visit cppdeactive.com when i visited it was some icici website about card protection plan. then she asked me to click on login. suddenly an apk was trying to be downloaded. when i asked her about it she said since we need more info normal forms were not enough so an apk was needed. this set of alarm bells. i started to stall by saying i am at office and will do later when i reach home. she was then claiming it was a on call process and if i don't complete my points would expire. i said "in that case no worries i have a important work call to attend i will check later if applicable". now suddenly she was asking at what time my office ends when i asked her to call after 9pm she was claiming bank hours are only till 6pm. i asked her to call me tommorow in that case.

i called my RM and asked what is the offer regarding cppdeactive. He straight away asked did any money get debited or have i provided any otp or card details. when i said no he said i was lucky and it's a fraud attempt and please ignore.

my contention is since they know it's a fraud why didnt they send out a email bringing awareness on this.

I got a similar call right after received axis SI card.
They had all details. and this guy was saying you have some points and I'll help you with getting it activated. I knew it was a scam (since I dont believe anyone who calls me saying they are the bank, be it legit or fake, i still dont believe any of them). And if I need to get something done, then I have the RM or BMs number and I'll call them.
So i just cut the call while he was speaking and blocked the number. end of story 🙂

since the apk was downloaded i am worried if there is any issue. when i searched online all websites are saying unless i click on the file or install nothing will happen. i am thinking of resetting my phone. what do you guys think??

not required. apk needs to be executed for any malware to get into your phone. merely downloading an apk doesnt have any issues. just delete it from your phone and it should be fine.

happened same with me, she told i had 6000+ points going to expire, I got that card one week ago, instantly some good words and block list added

Have you approached X handle for getting Rubyx card?

I am probably in middle of scam. But i want to see how far it goes or if it is scam. Two clue that this could be scam is that person knows I ordered a card from different bank than what this person is claiming. Card offered seems too good to be LTF. Someone is offering me Indusind heritage metal as ltf. I just asked instead to eazydiner signature as ltf instead to play around. Has shared lots of personal detail already but safe detail.

I like playing around with these cyber scammers. Usually like waste their 20 mins. 😁

After reading op's story , i remembered an old story.

A devout man goes fishing without any safety gear because he believed God would protect him. He was fishing in deep waters and his boat starts to sink. After sometime he had to jump off the boat. He was struggling to stay afloat. Then a boat passes by. 2nd fisherman enquires "Do you need help?" He answers "No, I don't. God will protect me.". After a little while a second boat arrives. 3rd fisherman asks same question. And he gives the same answer "I'm good. God will save me.". And then comes the third. By this time the drowning fisherman has turned almost blue. Looking at his sorry state, this guy just grabs him to pull him off the water but the stubborn devout fisherman said "Leave me alone! God will protect me! I'll survive." And he managed to get out of 4th fisherman's grip.

After little while the inevitable happens. He gets tired and sinks to the bottom of sea. as he was a good man, He then goes to heaven. When he sees God he asks why didn't god help him. God says," I changed the current for different boats so that they would reach you. But you didn't accept any of them!".

Op was about about to hear the same thing

i know they send out mail regarding not to install unknown apk other than from google play store.

my issue is "i didn't say anything other than cppdeactive offer and he immediately asks if money or otp if i have given" i didn't even say website or apk

so someone else must have gotten scammed and they know specifically this website or term internally

why i am bringing this up is i got mails from hdfc securities saying they have no association with so and so guys do not trust them.

India is filled to the brim with scammers and new ones pop-up every week, if not every day. The bank would have to send you a new email every other day reminding you of a new scam that has popped up and might even have to fund a whole research department to be up to date on these scams.

While it would be pretty cool if a bank actually did that and made it an opt-in service, I doubt that would ever actually happen since they have to keep their bottomline high to appease shareholders.
