Amex Platinum Metal offer

eve

TF Buzz
Just received an email to upgrade to Amex Platinum Metal and get 100,000 points. Membership cost 60k. Currently holding Amex travel card.

Is it worth the upgrade if I can get my money back from travel ?

If you often travel and stay in luxury hotels, then this card is a clear choice for you. You'll easily offset the cost with its benefits. In fact, even if you travel only once every three months, the card is still worthwhile given the regular offers it provides.
Can you pls help me with the maths that justifies 60K+tax renewal?

You can use this link to do the maths.

Thanks, however this is over inflated calculator.
Bottom line is that one earns 5 points on spend of 200.. thats low.. very low

I don't see any milestone benefits ?

Amex Plat charge is only for people with certain lifestyle.mainly for someone staying in luxury hotels, going to fine dine restaurants.

It does not have milestone benifits.but it does provide spend based offers time to time.like currently the offer i got in which 12000 taj vouchers on spend of 3L.

Well if you are solely looking at getting your money back then Amex Plat is not worth it.
For 1st year the card may look enticing with welcome offer however renewal these days are only getting 10k to 20k Taj voucher. So you may end up giving up the card in 2nd year.

Yes the calculator is way over inflated and renewals have become a pain. So 70k in annual fees are not justified even after you compare Amex Plat of other countries. Amex plat Indian version is probably the worst version.

Unless someone uses concierge and gets some exclusive invites, Amex plat is not justified as all the hotel so called elite tiers are devalued.

Lounge access is same as infinia or magnus except Centurion lounge access.

Well this was not necessarily true till early this year where u used to get 60k Taj vouchers or 100k reward points for renewal (after bargaining with helpdesk)

However now Amex has stopped offering those and is giving max 10 to 20k vouchers. Hence yes now Amex plat is only for PPL spending on luxury (though I fail to find any unique proposition with Indian Amex plat)

how much was your spend
Approx 5 Lakhs this year (I know it was less however I have 2 insurances via Amex and also a paid MRCC). Last year they offered 60K vouchers even with lesser spending. I have Infinia and Magnus and apart from acceptability problem with Amex Plat is difficult to spend on it except the multipler buys

I would disagree with completely on the value here.

So the fees for DEL-TYO on CX is ~25k. And DEL - LHR on VS ~35k.

Buying cash return tickets for both TYO & LHR in Y is ~1L total. Plus any additional miles from CC spend (smartbuy/traveledge/mmt vouchers etc) + miles you can accumulate.

You are at minimum 50k loss with these redemptions.

You will be hard pressed to do a good value miles redemption with Amex points. The only way you can do a good value redemption is through an outsized Marriott points stay.
My belief is same. Marriott with 30% bonus offer gives the max return. If you search hotels in Singapore (considering a nearby location) during December, majority of Marriott properties would be trending around 20-25K per night basis. If you book it for 5 nights, you are spending north of 1.25Lacs during the stay. On the contrary Amex metal with 1.15lac MR points offer with transferring it to 30% bonus MB points should be good. Plus with MB redemption, you get 1 night free with every block of 4 nights in Marriott property. Cherry on cake : You get upgraded to Bonvoy gold with AMex metal card which should give you a free room upgrade.
So all in all depends on your use case. IMO spending 70K to get this card should cover your stay during the holidays.
