AMEX platinum reserve suggestions

eve

TF Buzz
I currently have Platinum reserve card, which I feel is pretty useless. I checked with AMEX for upgrade or downgrade options, but they say they only option available is Platinum charge which has a very high annual fees.

Any suggestions if I can downgrade or upgrade to any other card. CC says I can only close and get a new card , but since this card is less than a year old it will impact my credit history if I close and get new one.

+ @xywowowvw answer, no it won't impact Credit history since its not completed in a year. There are other factors may affect but certainly not credit history under 1 year as a solo reason, unless you have only 1-2 years credit history.

Do NOT close your Amex card before applying for a new one.

If you surrender your current card, you'll not be able to apply for a new Amex card for a year.
This is a weird policy but was informed by the CC directly.

I'm in the same boat, I have a Platinum Reserve which I feel isn't the best value for the annual fee it charges.

You've two options, depending on your expenses,

1. If you've high expenses and stay in a city where Amex acceptance in not an issue,

Go with the Amex Platinum Travel card, first year free and much cheaper annual fees than compared to Platinum Reserve card.
You also get bonus MR points on joining and spending 4Lacs per year will get you ~40k in rewards.
(Rs.10,000 Taj Voucher and bonus MR points on milestones)

2. If your expenses are low with low Amex acceptance,

Go for the MRCC card which can be used to buy 1500x4 vouchers every month for the best reward rates.
And if there are any spend-based offers, it will come in handy for the big purchases.

Apply for either one of them and then close your Platinum Reserve to avoid getting blacklisted for one full year.
Also, Amex is offering a limited-edition set of cards if you apply before 16th October 6 PM so if you're interested, do it before that to enjoy the free deck! 🙂

Thanks for suggestions, please can you elaborate on 1500X4 vouchers for best reward rates?

I already have below cards that covers all perks I need…
HDFC Infinia paid
ICICI Sapphire LTF
ICICI world MC
Axis Burgundy DC

So not sure if AMEX travel is worth it for me. But having one AMEX card is good, so maybe MRCC is better suited

Monthly Milestone 1 - You get 1K MR points on spending on ₹1500 x 4 transactions every month.
Monthly Milestone 2 - Additional 1K MR points on spending ₹20,000 every month.

This way you get up to 24K MR points on spending 2.4 lacs every year.
The first year is free and the second year fee is ₹1500.

This is the best for 2.4L yearly spends and Plat Travel is best for 4L yearly spends.

Based on my findings (not direct experience):

Plat. Charge heavily beneficial if we utilize those hotel programs, flight deals etc. basically one must travel and stay in 4 or 5* hotels to get the best value out of it and if a person travels less than 2 or 3 times a year not much useful. Preferably international travel.

Plat. Reserv is like more or like similar benefis of Plat. Travel and most of them not recommended.

Yes the Marriott hotels are overpriced and the points required are at least 19000 to 55000 per room night

it happens usually we should value max. 50p and if we get more than that its extra benefit but when we consider for return or reward point of view that is safe for miles cards.

very few options has static values otherwise most of the loyalty programs are dynamic and reduces overall point value.

And Plat.Charge meant to be experience rather collect points, IMO.

They offered me both Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve and I declined both because they did not offer them life time free.
I am not interested in cards which are more profitable for the bank
