AmEx Platinum Travel Fuel Spends

Hello friends,

I understand that Platinum Travel card excludes fuel and insurance premiums for reward points. I stay in Kolkata and find that AmEx acceptance is very rare, especially in petrol pumps. To reach INR 4L milestone, fuel becomes imperative for me. Around 1-1.25L worth of fuel is bought in a year. But the problem is, if the card is not accepted at petrol pumps (mostly bought from IndianOil pumps), then I don't think its feasible for me to go for the card.

Another alternative: Can I buy vouchers of Amazon Pay from AmEx Gyftr website and pay at petrol pumps using Amazon Pay? This would indirectly convert to fuel spends and will help in reaching milestone benefits. Is there any convenience fees while buying Amazon Pay vouchers? Like in case of Regalia Gold, they charge 3% + GST for voucher purchases on Amazon.

Please guide.

Amazon Pay balance works at Apay QR codes.

I've seen them at several restaurants but I haven't seen them at any petrol pumps.

If you see them, try adding a smaller amount and see if that works, then you can add more balance.

My suggestion would be to look around for more HPCL pumps, a lot of them accept AmEx and once you find one, you can keep using the same pump.

Yes HP pumps have tie up with Amex and there's no surcharge

Try with HP petrol pumps
Avoid other petrol pumps as AMEX will charge additional surcharge

Yes, that's right.

But the shops that have Amazon QR are very less so make sure they accept it first before loading too many vouchers.

Interesting. And yes I agree that it is very rate to see an Amazon QR in the wild but will keep a look out for them now.

You can try a workaround by using ICICI Fasttag to make payment for fuel using HPPay and recharge the fasttag using Amazon Pay which you can buy using Gyftr for American Express.

Amex have tie up with hpcl. So there will be no surcharge applicable for hp.
Amazon pay for fuel is not a option as giftcard balance can not be transfered as cash wallet balance.
You can try using hp pay if card acceptability is a issue. It works on all hp pumps if you ask for it.


If you want to go with Indian oil only then one option you can go with
Install park + app and buy iocl fuel vouchers using amex cc.
use those at petrol pump. But confirm with that pumps whether they accepts fuel vouchers or not as i experienced non acceptability in case of iocl.

I doubt this will give you any base rewards But it will be counted towards milestone benefits.
