If you want credit card you can upgrade by calling customer care the limit will be merged

There is generally a 3 month cooling period between cc application.. try to apply after 3 months of existing card approval for better approval rate

If I call the customer care and ask for the 2nd card and the card is approved, does the previous card get closed and does it lead to a credit inquiry in the cibil report?

If you have pre approved offer from bank, you can take it as seperate card. Axis bank allows 3 cards per customer id.
Yes, all credit card aplication will have CIBIL enquiry.
