Actually that's not true. Many indian/african communities were matriarchal. Whether it's Kerala, Mysore, many Himalayan communities and many tribal communities. It was converted patriarchal by white christian through inheritance laws as a ploy to capture wealth.

Similar things happened in new orleans, usa. French quarter is pretty known for voodoo and witch craft. And they have pretty long history about it. I want to visit that city someday. And today that city is totally dependent on tourism on witchcraft.
