Axis Bank Introduces Mobile OTP – A Game Changer for Secure Banking!

🚀 Axis Bank is rolling out a new security feature – Mobile OTP! 🚀

If you use Axis Internet Banking, you know how important OTPs are for login and transactions. Until now, these OTPs were sent via SMS, but Axis Bank is now introducing Mobile OTP via the Axis Mobile App for a more secure and seamless experience.

What is Axis Mobile OTP?

Axis Mobile OTP allows users to generate OTPs directly from the Axis Mobile Banking App, eliminating the need to wait for SMS-based OTPs. This is useful when you have network issues or delays in receiving OTP messages.

I don't like this move at all. Apps reside within our phone ecosystem and can be hacked much more easily compared to the sms that will require hacking the telecom which must be impossible given it might become a national threat to defense

I am okay if they allow 3rd party apps to generate the OTP like authenticator apps but not their own app

[bold] It just looks like a pure cost cut measure to me from axis as always they trying to lower the user benefit (security in this case)[/bold]

Hope no other bank follows this and RBI makes it mandatory to adhere to sms verification which is such a good security feature only available in India

Exactly. If the phone is compromised, everything is compromised.

The app only works after verifying that your sim is present in your phone
Otp inside their app is much more secure than sms because people themselves aren't aware of to how many apps they have given sms permissions to

If you fear about your phone getting hacked then the sms messages are the easiest to get access to as opposed to data from an installed app

I would appreciate if banks allow people to Authorize transactions using mfa codes, they can only allow mfa feature to be enabled after a bank visit and explaining the customers about the risks associated and make sure it is actually the customer who himself is trying to enable this for his own convenience instead of some scammer convincing him to do so

I understand your concern, but SMS OTPs are not as secure as they seem. There are risks like SIM swap fraud, malware, and phishing. With app OTP, only a registered phone with an active SIM can generate OTPs, which adds more security. That said, Axis should give users the option to choose between SMS OTP and app OTP, just like some banks allow authenticator apps.

Exactly. If the phone is compromised, everything is compromised.
Yes, if the phone itself is hacked, then everything is at risk. But in that case, SMS OTP is also not safe because malware can read text messages. A secured app with PIN or fingerprint protection can be safer than SMS OTP, which can be intercepted.

The sms otp is received on the same phone sir
Exactly! Many apps can read SMS messages if given permission, which makes SMS OTPs risky. With app OTP, only the registered device can generate it, making it harder for fraudsters. However, Axis should still give users a choice between SMS and app OTP so that everyone can use what they feel comfortable with.

What do you all think? Should banks allow users to choose their preferred OTP method instead of forcing one?

Number change option is not there in app , NetBanking or atm
Who goes to branch for number change

This is there in other banks also. Like HSBC has a security code generator feature in their app. You can generate the OTP using that and login.
(You need to unlock the phone and the app to enter and generate the OTP - same as Axis)
Yes, many banks like HSBC already offer similar security code generators in their apps. But in my thread, I was only discussing whether users should have a choice between SMS OTP and in-app OTP. I didn’t say that Axis is making this switch mandatory.

The main question is—should banks allow users to pick their preferred OTP method instead of limiting them to just one?

That’s a great idea! Using MFA codes for transactions would make banking more secure. Making customers visit the bank before enabling it would also help, as they can learn about the risks and ensure they are enabling it themselves, not because of a scammer.

Banks should give people more control over security while keeping safety in mind. Having options like SMS OTP, app OTP, and MFA would be a good solution.

Let’s see if banks bring such features in the fut
ure!

Yes, but sim can be deactivate or blocked. Number can be changed at the bank also if needed.
Yes, a SIM can be deactivated or changed at the bank if needed. But the problem is that scammers can sometimes trick the telecom company into giving them a new SIM with your number.

That’s why SMS OTP is not always the safest option. App OTP is more secure because it only works on the registered phone. But still, banks should give people the choice to use either SMS OTP or app OTP, so they can choose what works best for them.

Game changer my foot. SBI has this feature for years and almost no one use that.

I get your point! Just because a feature exists doesn’t mean people will use it. But the difference here is that Axis seems to be pushing this more actively. If they make it the default or remove SMS OTP completely, more users might have to rely on it.

The real question is—should banks force users to switch, or should they give a choice between SMS OTP and app OTP? What do you think?

The most secure thing I saw in life was from Reliance Securities which they gave with demat. It was a security key with size of a pen drive and a display screen that use to show 6 digits otp. Worked on a hand watch cell and till now its cell is not dead. But after few years they changed the process to sms otp.

The login behind that security key was at server which was not accessible to outside world used to generate 6 digit number every 60 seconds and key was based on same algo. So whenever we used that security key the number with us and at server matched and we were allowed login. Such things may cost Rs.500 but much more secure than all these systems. And if someone lost it they can ask bank for new one by paying charge.

Yes, that’s a big issue! If number change isn’t available through the app, net banking, or ATM, then visiting the branch is the only option. But in today’s digital world, who really wants to go to the branch just for that?

Banks should make it easier to update phone numbers. Maybe they can add an option in the app with proper security checks. What do you think?
