Reminds me of the below Telugu proverb, when you quote commander about rupay.
హనుమంతుడి ముందా కుప్పిగంతులు''? (Hanumanthundi Munda Kuppi Gantulu?) - This proverb is used in Telugu to mock at a ridiculous attempt. When a person tries to boast about his own achievements or tries to act smart in front of a person who is more accomplished than him in such matters, then this proverb is used.
As per Hindu mythology, Hanuman, the monkey commander of the monkey army is an ardent devotee of Lord Srirama. He possesses enormous strength and intellectualism as well. Hanuman crossed the strait between India and Sri Lanka at a stretch in his search for Sita, Rama’s wife, who was abducted by Ravana. If a monkey on the tree tells him that he can jump this long, how funny and frivolous it looks!
Edit: Equivalent English proverb to this is “Carry coals to Newcastle”. It also means to do something unnecessary or to do something that is redundant or duplicative. Newcastle is an English town from which coal was shipped to other parts of England. So, carrying coals to Newcastle will not serve any purpose.
