I wanted to share a recent experience that might be helpful for anyone shopping in future at Lepakshi Handicrafts — the retail wing of the Andhra Pradesh Government that sells traditional Indian handicrafts.
Last month, I made a purchase there using my HDFC credit card, expecting to earn reward points as it was a retail store. However, I later noticed that no reward points were credited for the transaction.
Since Lepakshi is technically operated by the government, it appears banks are categorizing it under a government merchant code (MCC) — even though it functions like a normal retail outlet.
Note: I should’ve checked if the purchase was eligible for reward points — lesson learned. Just sharing this so others don’t miss out on points or cashback where they expect them!

📝 Takeaway:
- If you're shopping at Lepakshi (or any similar govt-affiliated retail outlet), be aware that you might not earn any credit card reward points or cashback.
- Always check your card’s T&Cs for exclusions (like government spends, utility, fuel, etc.).
- This seems like a classification issue — maybe banks should review how such hybrid merchants are tagged.
