Buying Gold from abroad: Any experiences? What should I keep in mind?

So say you went to Dubai wearing no jewellery and u return wearikg one chain, 2 Bangles and 1 ring, it should not stand out and get noticed by customs. If they ask, say u wore that from India and went. Now this does not mean that jewellery is noticable, like a very fat chain or fat bangles,. As long as it's subtle it will go unnoticed. But I'm this case you can't claim vat at the airport.
There is Malabar jewellers in dxb, you could check with them if the jewelry you buy from there is accepted in Malabar India for exchange.
Do they have records of gold jewellery worn by every person when someone leaves india?
I don't think this is been done as of now

If I am correct there are many shops in gold souq which are eligible for vat refund. From the custom perspective, I am going to dubai with my family of 5 and I am thinking of buying 5 thin chains of 20gm for each member so that it won't stand out in customs check. My only worry as of now is I heard that making charges in dubai is quite high compared to india. Just thinking how can I maximize the profit 🤔 Please suggest me if you guys have any idea on this. Thanks

Just a week ago when I came back to India there was no green channel and everyone was asked to go through red channel. Each bag went through xray.

There was one budding politician from Bhubaneswar (GOP) who was boasting his political achievements and was showing me pics on his phone with various high profile leaders. And was confident enough to become mla from Bhubaneswar in next election. He had lots of heavy gold ornaments on him. He also said as a politician he has to travel to bangkok every month or two.

At Bhubaneswar customs he was in front of me and customs caught him. The lady customs officer asked if those were gold and he nodded affirmative. She said whether he bought it from outside India. He claimed those are few years old and he was wearing those while flying out. The officer then asked him why didn't he declare before flying out. After that I got busy with baggage collection and didn't see him there after few minutes.

Can't say if his political affiliation worked or the customs officer was lenient.

For vat refund I am sure you have to declare that you bought the gold from there. I am not sure if you can claim vat refund and then just walk through red channel without declaration.
Also 2 years ago, when I went to dxb, the making charges were so high, the final cost was almost the same cost as buying in India. So I did not buy from there.

Am sure he would have got away, being a politician. He's so confident that he's literally wearing jewellery that stands out. Must be doing it frequently. But for 1 small chain, bangles and ring, no one will even notice.

The amount of gold was well over 100-150 grams

This rarely happens at big airports

Lol, an IAS friend of mine brings a lot more than permissible amounts of gold whenever she's travelling and this happens at IGI. Requires a couple of phone calls and you are good to go. She's the one who made me believe "politicians and bureaucrats are above the law in India".

I saw in few videos that there were few shops in gold souq claiming 0% making charges. But don't know whether those are genuine or not. If not I will have to use my bargaining skills to reduce the making charges 😈
