Charges Regarding Not Activating Card - Axis Bank

Hello everyone, my father received the Axis Privilege Card with a joining fee of 1500. However, he didn't activate the card. Now, he has received a bill for the joining fee with a due date of 1st June. Does he still have to pay the charges even though he didn't activate the card? Customer support says that he has to pay the charges if there is an outstanding balance on the card, and the card won't be cancelled.

  • When you say he hasn't activated the card, do you mean he's not made any transaction on it at all?
  • If you've not made any transaction post bill generation, try calling up Axis Bank customer care or emailing them asking them to cancel the card and remove the joining fees
  • If he's received a bill, it's prudent to pay the Total Amount Due and continue fighting/escalating with the bank. If you don't pay the amount will start to snowball with interest and late fees making it harder to resolve quickly. You can earn ₹1500 back but CIBIL is somewhat permanent
  • Complaint resolution matrix is given at the back of the credit card statement

He hasn't made any transactions with the card. In fact, he didn't even generate the PIN for the card. I saw some posts saying there is a rule by the RBI that states if you don't activate the card within 30 days, the card should be closed and no fees should be charged. Is this true?

I am not sure. This should help: RBI CC FAQs.aspx

Card Activation can happen through many actions
1. Transaction
2. Setting Pin
3. Changing Transaction Settings
4. Using the activation code in the kit
5. Missed Call / SMS based activation
6. Activating via phone call from customer care

If you are positive that absolutely no action was done to activate the card, then it automatically gets cancelled in 37 days ( 30 days + 7 day grace )
If you did any action, then you need to pay the fees as the card has been activated.

Now for your scenario
1. Pay the fees immediately - Not paying will get reported to CIBIL impacting your credit score significantly.
2. Continue escalating with Customer Care , Nodal, PNO. For most cases, at one point they will refund the charges.
You can escalate to RBI ombudsman in the end of nothing works

If you are sure the card wasn't activated through any mode( call/sms/whatsapp/pin/nb/app etc) then the card has to be closed within 37 days as per rbi law. (30day+7 days extension)

I would suggest pay it and then fight. Its not worth ruining credit score for couple thousand rupees.

You can see point vi and vii under point 6. Issue of Credit Cards of the RBI master direction here: https://rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=12300

You can find the points below:

vi. Card-issuers shall seek One Time Password (OTP) based consent from the cardholder for activating a credit card, if the same has not been activated by the customer for more than 30 days from the date of issuance. If no consent is received for activating the card, card-issuers shall close the credit card account without any cost to the customer within seven working days from date of seeking confirmation from the customer. In case of a renewed or replaced card, the closure of an inactivated card shall be subject to payment of all dues by the cardholder.

vii. No card-issuer shall report any credit information relating to a new credit card account to Credit Information Companies prior to activation of the card. Any credit information relating to such inactivated credit cards already reported to Credit Information Companies shall be withdrawn immediately; under no circumstances it shall take more than 30 days from the effective date of these directions.

According to RBI guidelines, it should specifically be "OTP" based, so if you have done any sort of OTP based transaction then the card is already activated.

AXIS is performing poorly. A few days ago, there was a post about canceling Flipkart and other cards from AXIS's side along with revoking rewards, and now this scenario. I have never applied for AXIS till date. These cases are convincing me to stay away as well.

Axis cc activation ? Wo to cc to your eyes ka direct contact mein hi activate ho jata hai. Eyes band ho ya khula, cc envelop ke andar ho ya bahar, usse koi farak nahi parta. Axis bank sabse alag hai, naam se hi pata chalta hai. Apne body ka pura axis ghuma ke rakh dega. Duur rahna hi samajdary hai 😂😂

Try to escalate to M.D escalation desk before RBI also.
