CIBIL enquiry for Axis Pre-approved credit card

NCC

TF Buzz
Recently I got pre-approved credit card offers from Axis. Some days back, I applied from their app and everything went well and reference number was generated. However, today they called me saying the previous application details had been lost and they would apply for me. After some confirmations, the credit card application was successfully done. And it was approved quickly. However, after sometime I got an sms from CIBIL saying that Axis Bank had done enquiry. I thought cibil enquiry was not usually done for pre-approved cards. Is it a normal practice to do the enquiry even for pre-approved offers?

Update:

26 February 2025: Applied for a pre-approved credit card through Axis Mobile app.

27 February 2025: Got a call from virtual RM telling me about pre-approved credit card offers. I told them that I applied already. Told me they could not see any application in the system and asked me to wait for a few days.

3 March 2025: Missed a call from virtual RM.

4 March 2025: Virtual RM called me again and told me previous application lost/some data missing, applied a new application with application number starting with MLP. Application was approved quickly. CIBIL enquiry was done. Card was shown in Axis app. I could link the card to UPI apps like GPay and transaction could be done.

5 March 2025: In the morning, I got some sms for the same card with a new application no. starting with C1. Also received the approved message. CIBIL enquiry was done again.

Two CIBIL enquiries are done for one credit card.

Generally banks do only soft enquiry for preapproved offer. But they can do hard enquiry. if you dont have any axis cc earlier or have only a short credit history they will do hard enquiry. They did hard enquiry for my preapproved offer as well .

But I think this is a different case. When it has been more than 6m since customer last did kyc, they might direct local branch to do rekyc. Here mostlikely the branch intentionally closed old application and apply from there side to reach their target. You can complain against the branch for this. Does it have same cl shown at the time of application?

Yes, credit limit was shown. The call came from virtual RM. Like you said it is likely that they might have intentionally closed the previous application.

why a reference number is generated if it's pre-approved.... it should be generated instantly
