Credit card & bank account journey: Review and consolidation

Hey All,
I'm taking another look at my card collection. I'm considering closing or consolidating some cards, or maybe switching to more efficient ones for all my needs.
Just to give you some background, I started this card journey back in November 2022. It's been almost 2 years now and I've applied for and closed quite a few cards along the way. So here's where I'm at:

Spends:
  • - For my daily expenses, grocery shopping, and offline UPI payments, I spend around 25k per month.
  • - When it comes to Amazon purchases, I use it for all my water and electricity payments, as well as some grocery shopping and other stuff.
  • - Swiggy is my go-to for most grocery shopping, Instamart, Genie, and Dineout.
  • - Occasionally, I use Jio Mart if there are items I can't find on Amazon or Swiggy.
  • - I pay around 12k per quarter for LIC premiums.
  • - Fuel costs me around 10k per month.
  • - I travel by train or flight once a month, usually spending no more than 20k for a round trip.
  • - I don't stay in hotels regularly, maybe once a quarter or 3-4 times a year, and never for more than 2-3 days.
  • - Miscellaneous expenses amount to around 20k per month.

As for bank accounts:
- I have my salary account with ICICI Bank.
- For all other purposes, I use SBI as my savings account.

Credit Cards:
CardLimit, FeeUses
ICICI Amazon Pay10L, LTFPrimarily for all Amazon purchases, and other miscellaneous.
Mainly because direct cashback to Amazon Pay Wallet which I can use for purchases.
ICICI Sapphiro10L, LTFFor B1G1 movie offers, and Lounge Access.
But spends are considerably less on this now.
ICICI Coral RupayLTF, 10L Shared with SapphiroNot using. No impact even if I close this.
HDFC Swiggy1.24L, 500 + 500
(waived for 2L annual spend)
Mainly for Swiggy Genie, Instamart, and Swiggy food. 10% cashback.
Also for other online purchases. (Mostly to meet 2L limit)
Federal Celesta5L, LTFFor Lounge access. Now a days Federal is giving lot of offers on their cards.
Haven't used much, but I am thinking of using this looking at the rewards/cashbacks/points.
Federal Wave Rupay5L, LTF, shared with CelestaThis is my primary UPI card, linked to Google Pay. Using it for all UPI scans.

I just need one or two cards. Any better alternatives? Or this is enough? Kindly suggest.

check these:

1, Milestone card: Ex: Platinum Travel on 4L spends, you'll get 6% (in amzn vouchers) + 10k taj voucher, if you want to utilize else do trade or ignore for base calculation.

works for: amznpay utilities + amzn shopping + voucher related online (myntra and others) + fuel + travel.. based on #14 apprx. 33k per month

(this is when purchased voucher anywhere, fuel anywhere.. amex site provides 3x which is upto 8%).

2, TataNue Infinity: Currently for your cash alternative. Provides 3.5%.. based on #14 apprx. 23k per month

works for: UPI shopping spends + utilities + bb

3, Axis Airtel: For Swiggy 5k/pm, and utilites 2.5k/pm (apprx. 9%)

works for: swiggy + utilities

4, HSBC Live+: 10k/pm

works for: Grocery, Dining

# CB or Equivalent amzn voucher POV.
Thanks 🙏 this is a great suggestion.
I will look into them and choose the optimal ones. Like you say it's evolving and I am prepared to face the changes. Thanks a lot again.

You're a travel required person, then do consider Atlas, Regalia Gold or Marquee might help those short trips.

@cardio_guy So detailed thead.. this will surely help many in coming days.

Thank you! This thread reflects the evolution of our family expenses and card journey.
If you look at the initial posts, they were a bit crude and unclear. However, by the time I reached post #14, things became much clearer.
With my current lifestyle, I feel I've reached the peak of my card journey. I'll revisit and update this thread whenever I cross any new milestones in life.

Finally, I'm ending 2024 with just 2 cards for all spends - HDFC Swiggy and HDFC Tata Neu Infinity. Both of these cards have been great for me. I'm actually starting to like the Neu card. There have been a few limitations such as being limited to Tata environment and locked in Tata brands, as well as neu coins not unlocking together. However, the reward rates of 10%, 5%, and 1.5% for UPI scans have been really good for me. As someone who uses a cashback card for normal spending, this is more than enough. I'm slowly phasing out my other cards, unless it's absolutely necessary (like for a B1G1 movie offer or lounge access).

did you closed others?

HSBC platinum is in the process of getting closed. Keeping other cards.
  • Amazon Pay ICICI - Not using anymore. Swiggy HDFC has taken over this place.
  • ICICI Sapphiro - Using only for B1G1 movie ticket booking up to Rs 1000 in BMS (maybe once in 3-4 months)
  • Federal Celesta - Using only for airport lounge access.
  • Indusind Tiger - Using only for airport lounge access and BMS one ticket (Rs 500/-) free once in 6 months.

you may get a card for grocery too, instead of closing HSBC convert it to Live+

Ending 2024 on a good note.

It has been a wonderful year. I am very happy to have learnt a lot of things from this community.
Opened an HDFC salary account. All my experiences with HDFC have been good so far. No nonsense and things are falling in place.
I think I made a good choice by selecting HDFC. Rest all the things remains the same. Not yet finalized the plans for 2025, I might take:
  • HSBC Live+ for daily spends
  • One of the reward point cards based on HDFC salary account eligibility
Wishing for a very happy new year 2025.

Some more updates as of February 2025 on existing cards, expenses, and future plans:

Cards:
  • HDFC Tata Neu Infinity: UPI and all other purchases
  • HDFC Swiggy: Swiggy, Instamart, Genie Purchases
  • ICICI Amazon Pay: Amazon purchases, flights and hotels
  • ICICI Sapphiro, Indusind Tiger, Federal Celesta: Idle cards

  • Amazon purchases - 4000 per month
  • Flights - 6000 per month

  • Optimize expenses and bring down what's possible.

Credit Cards & Bank Accounts Suggestions April 2025 Onwards

Over the past 2-3 years, the journey of using different credit cards and banking services has been a great learning experience. Exploring various types of cards has been interesting, but it is always an ongoing process. Every year, it is good to review past choices to see if they are still relevant and beneficial. Some banks or cards may need to be reconsidered, upgraded, or even discontinued. Regular reviews and changes help in optimizing the benefits and ensuring that the financial strategy remains effective.
To analyze spending patterns better, it helps to break down expenses into different sections. This gives a clear idea of where the major expenses lie and which cards are being used for those purchases. Understanding this spending distribution makes it easier to check if the current cards are the best fit. After going through this breakdown, it is also possible to identify areas for improvement, such as using different cards for certain categories to maximize rewards and benefits.

Monthly Expenses
Monthly expenses are not always the same every month. Some months, certain expenses are higher, while in others, they might be lower. Some purchases happen once a year, some every quarter, and some more frequently. The numbers provided are an approximate average, considering upper limits for most expenses. This method gives a more realistic picture of household spending rather than relying on fixed numbers. On average, total household expenses can range between ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 per month. This variation depends on various factors like seasonal purchases, travel, or large one-time payments. By understanding these patterns, it becomes easier to manage finances efficiently. It also helps in choosing the right credit cards and banking options to ensure that spending is optimized for maximum rewards, cashback, and benefits.

Learnings:

Not all expenses can be optimized, and it’s not always possible to use the best payment method every time. Choosing the most rewarding option for every transaction is not practical due to habits, convenience, mental blocks, or the effort required versus the actual return. Personal preferences and behavior also play a big role in how payments are made. Having the best credit card does not automatically guarantee maximum rewards. It’s better to use a card that feels right at the moment rather than stressing over every possible reward or cashback. Ultimately, it’s about finding the right balance between effort and benefit. This is where premium cards make life easier. A card with a flat 3% base reward rate across all spending categories can be more useful than juggling ten different cards with varying reward structures. Fewer choices often lead to a better quality of life and less decision fatigue. Optimizing card usage is a personal choice, and what works best will vary for everyone. The key is to find a system that is simple yet rewarding based on individual spending habits.

Plan Ahead:

On average, monthly spending falls between ₹60,000 and ₹1,00,000. For simplicity, I often use Amazon Pay ICICI, HDFC Swiggy, or HDFC Tata Neu Infinity for most transactions. Cashback cards remain my top choice, while I have yet to explore reward point-based or milestone-based credit cards. Since I started using credit cards only 2-3 years ago, I am still learning and refining my approach to maximizing benefits. Among different banking ecosystems, HDFC is my top preference, followed by ICICI. Axis Bank offers excellent rewards, but I haven’t been drawn to it yet. American Express is ruled out due to limited acceptance. While smaller banks provide good benefits, I currently keep some of their cards only for specific offers. If I find a card with a better base reward rate, I may consolidate my spending on just one or two cards. For now, HDFC Tata Neu Infinity seems to be the best fit, but I remain open to exploring better options.
