DCB Metal offer (Jugaad)

shazansalim

TF Select
For 1 year I have been using my IDFC wealth debit card for offline spends and thanks to that I accumulated a cashback of around 1.4 lac, but unfortunately they have decided to stop the rewards program from 2026. Due to this I started looking for alternative to offline spends. After research I found infinia is the goat but out of my aukaat. Therefore I contacted someone I know to check if I can get DCB Metal.

He told me that it is possible, provided I make an HDFC account and after 2 months create an FD of 5-10 lac and then he will get things done and provide me the card only if my CIBIL is good. So he wants to check my CIBIL first, this will ofcourse give a hard query which I dont want. At the same time I am not sure whether by taking this route after 3 or 4 months I will have the DCB in my hands. At the same time he did not mention the duration of FD too (FD will be loss making for me as I have money parked in bonds giving 11% p.a)

I don't have a salary, I am a student.
So I wanted to know from the community; Shall I go ahead and follow what he said? I dont wanna be tricked at the end of this, especially when you plan for something for 4 months.
Secondly, Is there a better alternative? A debit card of 2% reward rate or a credit card easy to get with same reward rate?

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This is a classic trap. Take a u turn rightaway.

Firstly, DCB is not the same premium card it used to be. Reward rate on vouchers is not great, and it makes no sense to use it for buying omething like Amazon voucher where convenience fee will eat it up further.

And Diners is not accepted offline usually, it has got a poor acceptance in India.

It’s an evergreen trap.

I’ve heard many cases. DCBM is not that hard to get, so open an account in HDFC and apply for a card on a card-to-card basis. If any other card has a limit greater than 5 lakhs, try your luck in a direct way.

So as Kareena Kapoor said in 3 Idiots to Amir Khan in her sister’s wedding scene - "BHAAG LO, FREE ADVICE HAI".

As you're a student, my gentle advice:

Don't go for such cards where you need to pay this kind of fees. Bank employees know you're a student, and you'll likely end up burning your hands in this game. DCB doesn't even give you the fees back as points, not until you spend high enough in a quarter.

Probably go for some some card that is accepted widely and easily gettable without paying a fee. Or if that doesn't happen, let it be. That time will come, probably sooner if you invest in yourself. Don't make yourself vulnerable to a debt trap.

Bro, he will end up giving you diners privilege card, don’t fall in trap, nowadays dcbm isn't so easy to get, c2c will end up max to millennia even if you have 10 lacs limit on any other card.

Sir, can you elaborate a little more, IDFC was giving me 2.66% return and got amazon shopping vouchers with that. I saw DCB has 3.33% reward rate, what will be the effective reward rate after buying amazon shopping voucher?

HDFC has a SmartBuy portal which gives accelerated rewards on shopping vouchers, flight/hotel bookings if you use HDFC cards. The best is obviously Infinia (5X), DCB Metal is 3X.

But some vouchers like Amazon have convenience fee & a monthly cap, so effectively you will earn ~5.6% on that instead of 3X i.e. ~10%. Vouchers that do not have a fee on the platform, will get you the max return.

If you buy vouchers outside of the platform, say on Amazon - you will get the default 3.33% on DCB (same as Infinia).

I have an unsecured card with 5 lac limit but the problem is, It is a local bank card (J&k BANK) it is not even on bharat bill system. I think I must give it a try and ask them if card to card basis is an available route

If you don't mind, perhaps you can share exactly how much you are planning to spend next year (and forward).

Being a student, I don't think it is wise for you to even pursue the banks to avail a premium card. Banks love customers like this, perfect for them to meet some of their targets (especially when it is year end) by playing the customer into buying something they shouldn't.

If you have a high spend (considering all of this is not rent, property or such category which is usually excluded), perhaps you can get a premium card for one of your earning family member who has some CIBIL history (either through CCs or loans). And then, you can apply for an add-on card in your name. Many of these premium cards come with 2-3 complimentary add-on cards, i.e. it can availed for free. Of course, the rewards/points you'd earn will accumulate against your family member's account. If that's not a problem, I think this is your best bet at this moment.

Thank you sir for such a careful advice. But I have the sufficient funds, I am not someone who lives a lavish lifestyle but I do keep good banking knowledge and try to capitalize on the banking perks. Since my idfc debit card will stop giving cashback, I need a card with similar cashback

Don't block your money. If you really really need to get, then go for an unsecured one. Depending on the spending pattern you can find mid tier LTF Cards which you can use to maximise reward rate for you.
