Diners Club Black v/s Axis Magnus (post 1L milestone)

Hi All,

I am not sure on where to use Diners club BLACK credit card even after Axis Magnus post 1L milestone.
Note: I am comparing transferring of reward points to Krisflyer miles.
  • Better base reward of Axis Magnus
Axis Magnus gives a better rate even after 5:4 conversion, i.e., 4.8% whereas Diners Club gives a base reward of 3.33% (considering 1:1) only.

  • Better rewards multiplier with Axis Magnus
    • IGP: Magnus has 20x (10K limit) where as Diners has 10x (2.5K limit/day)
    • Flights (their own platform): Magnus provides 5x (4.8 x 5 = 24% no limit) where as Diners provide (3.33 x 5 = 16.65 with a limit of 2.5K/day)
    • Hotels: Magnus provides 10x (4.8 x 10 = 48% no limit) in MMT using GYFTR voucher whereas Diners provide (3.33 x 10 = 33% with a limit of 2.5K/day)
    • IRCTC/train booking: Magnus will provide a base reward of 4.8% only whereas Diners provide (3.33 x 3 = 10% with a limit of 2.5K/day)
    • Redbus: Magnus will provide a base reward of 4.8% only whereas Diners will provide (3.33 x 5 = 16.65% with a limit of 2.5K/day)
    • Instant Voucher: Most of the vouchers are available in both and Magnus provides minimum 3x so minimum 4.8 x 3 (no limit) = 14.4% where as vouchers in Diners go for 3.33 x 3 = 10% (limited to 2500/day)
    • Apple products: Magnus provides 5x minimum in all retail marketplaces, i.e., 4.8x5 = 24% (no limit) whereas Diners will give 3.33 x 3 = 10% (limited to 2500/day)
    • Flipkart: Magnus provides 5x GYFTR voucher (no limit) whereas Diners provides 2x, i.e., 3.33x2 = 6.66% (limited to 2500/day)
  • Dining spends during weekends
Magnus offers 1K discount using eazydiner whereas Diners club provides 2x on weekends.
so, it can be concluded like: If paying online via eazydiner or on weekdays, use Magnus, else EazyDiner.
So baring IRCTC(train), redbus booking and weekend offline dining swipe - I don't find anywhere else where I can use Dinerz Club and finding it difficult to reach 5L yearly annual fee waiver limit.
  • Should I keep Diners paying the annual fee?
  • If no, should I downgrade or do what ?

Do not have to stick with any single card. If that particular card is not useful, and making your returns negative with annual fee, leave it and continue/switch with alternative better cards.

Note: You should be in a position to get that card again, just incase if things are favouring that close/switched card.

One scenario:
- What if Magnus did some changes after 6 months from now, and looking equal to DCB (just as an example), which card will you use?

- If you close DCB now, then after 6 months above scenario happened, will you be able to get DCB again or continue Magnus?

If answer is Magnus, then downgrade that DCB and stay in HDFC.
- What if Magnus did some changes after 6 months from now, and looking equal to DCB (just as an example), which card will you use?
My response - Depends on what changes does Magnus do.

- If you close DCB now, then after 6 months above scenario happened, will you be able to get DCB again or continue Magnus?
My response - I am not sure on this as I have 6.5L limit and don't want to close HDFC card. Now will they provide me a downgraded card if applied? Or can I tell them to downgrade or make it LTF? If it was Infinia, I would have kept without any second thought but DCB I am not finding it useful.

So i have decided as follows (considering spends where I am getting base rewards only from both the cards):
  • Base rewards on spends in Magnus = 5L x 4.8 % = 24K points
  • Base rewards on spends in DCB = 5L x 3.33 % = 16.5K points
  • Loss of points = 7.5K
  • But if I will have to make the annual fees, it will be 10K + taxes = 11.8K
  • So it is better to spend using DCB after utilising 1L/month in Magnus.
Note: I want to continue HDFC as once I get the credit limit enhancement to 8L+, I will force them to provide me Infinia.

Is it 8L+ or 10L+ limit now required for Infinia?

Thanks for summarizing this comparison so beautifully and specifically useful for me who has recently joined both DCB and Magnus. Even I was having this quandary where to use DCB regularly considering the limited reach and many instances where Magnus seems to be definitely way better than DCB.

As of now I have decided to use DCB for my actual home rent payment to my landlord (~30k) using RedGiraffe (gets me approx 1k points @3.33%). Considering the upcoming devaluation in Jan, will do one more transaction in that month to see if the points do accrue to the card like usual. If not, will shift this spend also to Magnus.

Have used DCB for one weekend dining benefit (places where Indusind Eazydiner has no reach this is useful - for many normal restaurants which families go to and not high end ones) - maybe will continue with this.

For apple products can you clarify the 24% - which sites you are referring to for Magnus?

For me, my LTF application is still pending with HDFC Escalation CC which seems to be taking it own sweet time (as of now 40+ days and counting on that) - am relying on my alma matter institute for this. Hopefully they do upgrade to LTF. If not, even I may close it post 1 year - right now too early to think of that.

In my case, though the annual emoluments do exceed Infinia's requirement, am not sure if HDFC would upgrade me to one so fast. So right now I'm not pursuing that case.

I wouldn't suggest any downgrade to you as DCB in itself is a great card to have. Upgrades are always tricky at banks.

You can purchase gift vouchers (GYFTR) of Croma, Flipkart or shopping voucher of Amazon and use the same for purchase of apple products.

I have similar query on optimizing spends between Magnus (paid), DCB (LTF), Amex MRCC (paid), Amex Plat Travel (paid) (have many other cards of other banks but all LTF so only for specific bank offers)
Amex MRCC will be just 1500 x 4 per month
Question is how to reach Amex Plat Travel 4 lakh milestone while maximizing Magnus for edge rewards
DCB is LTF so willing to not spend unless it is specifically giving higher rewards (IRCTC/weekend dining/Bigbasket vouchers which are not on Axis Gyftr)
Issue is also that I don't know at start of month whether I can hit 1 lakh in a month with certainty or not.. so can't decide start of month to spend on Magnus or Amex Plat Travel

Shopping directly on Apple store via Grabdeals gives 6X reward points (max 10k/month though). Haven't yet tried this but I heard this 6X bonus point is in addition to the normal edge points.

I don’t trust this visiting website in the session initiated by grabdeals because many a times I have seen that the points isn’t credited and then you can’t just do anything.

Also purchasing vouchers gives you more than 10K in return. For example if you purchase a product worth 70K, you can get 16.8K in return as there is no limit on 5x voucher.

Need similar analysis with new reward ratios.
