HDFC Credit Cards Extra charges levied on HDFC credit card for education payment

Hi folks!

I made a payment of 5L education fees on Manipal institute's website for my sister's education fees using DCB. During the entire payment flow, there was no mention of any extra charge and I've the recording as well.

However when the payment settled, I was charged 0.85% + gst as transaction fees on HDFC's payment gateway.

I escalated it to HDFC pno but they said that it's mentioned on the website and they won't be refunding transaction fees.

After that, I created a complaint in RBI ombudsman but they also closed the case in favor of HDFC Bank saying that it was mentioned on the merchant's website and the request is non appealable.

Are there any options left for me or should I consider this amount gone?

Consider it gone, you should've asked here or read in the forum. There were multiple threads regarding this.

T&C states

If you make education payments through college/school websites or their POS machines, there will be no fees. International education payments are excluded from this charge. However, on Published on 13th Aug 2024 payments through third-party apps like (but not limited to) CRED, PayTM, Cheq, MobiKwik and others, a 1% fee will be charged and capped at ₹3000 per transaction.

If OP paid on institute's website, he should not have been charged right?

Yes you are right
But if merchant charged this fee then nothing to do

I want to ask OP , what amount you are charged??

If merchant charged, it should have been included in the final amount while entering the OTP. OP says the gateway didn't show any charges either(like income tax portal does) to be charged later.

Which website you are talking here?
If it's mentioned on merchant website about extra charges then you have to pay.
If hdfc charged you should get it back.

It was Manipal institute's website and OTP amount showed 5L. Additional 0.85% + gst was added after transaction was settled.

Hdfc claims that it's written on the merchant website but it was nowhere during the payment flow so from login till the OTP page.

These charges are levied by payment gateways to customer for using their gateway to pay fees to institute. There are different charges for multiple payment gateways. I think you have missed seeing that charges on payment gateway page which appears when you click drop down menu icon. These charges were usually applied after final payment/transaction. We usually called them PG charges in the statement.

I need to do a NEFT transfer of 2.5L to a private education institute. The institute has given a saving account number for the transfer. I have a DCB, American Express, Atlas Credit Card, Amazon Pay ICIC. Is there anyway to do this through any of these credit card? Please help

-If the Institute has a POS machine, then go and swipe, that's the easiest way.
-If they have a payment portal where you can enter your CC and do the payment, that is also fine.
In my case, I wanted to use DCB and the portal was accepting only visa and master, hence I called up the school and asked whether they have a POS (luckily they had). And I directly paid at school.
