Hello TFCians,
Want to get a US American Express credit card? You can transfer your Indian Amex relationship to the US and get your first US Amex credit card easily. For this process, you don’t need an SSN or ITIN. This option is only available for your first card. For a second card, you’ll need an ITIN or SSN and a US credit score.
The Process:
Method 1:
- Visit the Amex global relationship transfer link: Global Card Relationship Transfer.
- Select the USA from the country list, as you want to apply for a US Amex card.
- On the next page, choose "Personal Card" or "Business Card" based on your requirements.
- A new tab will open. Click on "Log In" at the top right corner and log in using your Indian Amex account credentials.
- Choose the card you want to apply for and click "Apply."
- On the next page, you’ll see a disclaimer stating that Amex US will access your Indian data; click "Yes" to proceed.

- Your name and date of birth should appear pre-filled, as Amex US is fetching data from your Indian Amex account.
- Check the box for "I don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) but can enter a government-issued ID number," and select "Passport" from the dropdown menu.

- Enter your passport details, US address, US phone number, income, and other required information.
- Click "Agree & Submit."
- One of two things can happen next: you may be approved immediately (rare) or asked to contact Amex by phone, with a number provided.
- Use Skype to call the US toll-free number for free.
- They may request a passport copy via an upload link or address proof, or they may just verify your details without additional documents.
- You’ll receive Amex’s decision within a few minutes, though it can take up to 72 hours.
Method 2:
- Call Amex US customer care at +1-888-297-1244.
This is a US toll-free number, but you cannot call from your Indian mobile number. If you have an active US phone number, call from that, or simply use Skype to make the call. You don’t need any subscription, and you’ll be able to call for free.
- Tell the Amex customer care executive that you hold an Amex credit card in India and are moving to the US, so you want to transfer your relationship to Amex US using the Amex Global Relationship Transfer (GRT) method.
- They will ask for the necessary information required to apply for a new credit card and your Indian Amex credit card number.
You will then receive an OTP to verify the ownership of your Indian Amex account.
- After verification, they will read out the most important terms and conditions on the call, which is mandatory in the USA, so you’ll have to listen to it for a while. After that, they will ask for your final confirmation before submitting your application.
- You will typically receive a decision within a few minutes. If they require additional information, they might transfer your call to the Global Relationship Transfer (GRT) team. If the team is unavailable at that time, they may ask you to call back later as per their availability.
Good luck with your application!
